    Pitt-Bradford junior right-handed pitcher Aaron Cressley was selected in the 26th round by the San Diego Padres in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday. Cressley became just the second Panther to be drafted since 1998, the first season in Pitt-Bradford baseball history. The only other player selected was Zach Foster. Foster, also a right-handed pitcher, was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 49th round of the 2008 draft. “I am so happy for Cress,” said head coach Bret Butler. “This is exactly what he has been striving for his entire collegiate career. His efforts are paying off and I am so very proud of him. I’m also happy for our pitching coach Zach Foster. Zach did an exemplary job preparing him for this opportunity.” “This means everything to me,” said Cressley. “It has been my dream for my whole life and I can finally say I made my dream come true. I am very thankful to the Padres for picking me up and believing in me. I am truly blessed.” The Corry native got off to a blistering start in his junior campaign and went on to post a 5-4 record and pitched three complete games. He started in all nine of his appearances and tossed a team-high 52.1 innings. He finished with a 2.75 ERA and fanned a total of 76 batters, also first on the squad. Cressley earned a spot on the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference second team for his efforts this year.

  • BEHREND'S DESANTIS GOES TO HEAD OF THE CLASS AS BASEBALL ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN

    Penn State Behrend baseball pitcher Dante DeSantis (DuBois, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) was named to the 2014 Division III Capital One Academic All-American Second Team, announced on Wednesday. Majoring in finance, DeSantis compiled a 3.87 grade point average and was the only Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) player selected to the squad after earning First-Team All-District honors. The senior went 9-3 with a 2.75 earned run average with 57 strikeouts in 2014 with the Lions. He is third on the Behrend all-time list in k's (191), fifth in wins (20), and fifth in innings pitched (200.1).

  • BENIM EARNS 500TH CAREER COACHING WINS

    With the ECAC tournament win over Bethany College on Saturday, Penn St. Behrend head coach Paul Benim earned his 500th career win. Benim is in his 22nd year as the Lions' head coach. Under his guidance, the Behrend baseball program has accrued Over the past six seasons, the Lions have posted 183 wins while earning an AMCC-best 88 victories. Benim has established the Behrend Lions as one of the best programs in the Mid-Atlantic Region, earning regional and national attention. In the thirteen years prior to taking over, the program had won only 24% of its contests. During Benim's tenure, the program has earned victories in 63 percent of its games, with nearly every school record being broken. The program has made the conference tournament 13 times, won three regular season and five conference tournament titles, and finished as runner-up four times. Benim, the all-time leader in baseball coaching victories at Behrend, is 471-269-3 during 21 seasons and posts a career head coach mark of 553-306-3.

    On Friday, May 16, the Behrend baseball team and coaching staff visited the Penn State Behrend Child Care Center, located in Knowledge Park. This annual event is part of the team's community service to enjoy time away from the field in a fun atmosphere. "The kids and team had a great time playing outside today. They had a lot of energy and seemed to really enjoy kickball, whiffle ball, duck duck goose," said junior pitcher Tyler Geer. The baseball team also volunteers at Habitat for Humanity as another way to give back to the community.

    Ferguson went the distance in the Redhawks' semifinal victory over Penn St. Behrend to guarantee them a ticket to the championship game. The junior pitched all 9 innings with 9 strikeouts while giving up just one run on 5 hits for the win. Ferguson’s performance helped lead La Roche to their second AMCC crown. On the season, Ferguson finished first in wins (10) and first in strikeouts (97) in the AMCC. BEST OF THE REST: Mount Aloysius JR Derrick Capiak finished his season with 6.2 innings of work in a loss to PS-Behrend, striking out 5 and allowing just 3 earned runs … Pitt-Greensburg SR Matt Kochasic put together a complete elimination game performance against PS-Behrend, going all 9 innings for the win.

    Barlamas had a tournament to remember, hitting .538 with a home run, 7 RBI, and 2 runs. In the championship game win over Pitt-Greensburg, Barlamas went 4-for-4 with a home run, 5 RBI, and 1 run scored. The junior carried an on-base percentage of .500 and slugging .769, while maintaining a perfect fielding percentage through the tournament. Barlamas’ efforts helped lead the Redhawks to their secnd crown in 3 years. On the season, Barlamas finished third in batting average (.431) and 2nd for RBI (44) in the AMCC. BEST OF THE REST: Mount Aloysius OF Connor Bowie batted .444 with 2 runs and 1 double while slugging .556 in a pair of losses during the AMCC tournament … Pitt-Greensburg C Anthony Bozzuto hit .538 collecting 7 hits, 2 walks, 4 RBI, and 1 run scored while carrying a .562 on-base percentage over four games to help the Bobcats reach the championship game.

    On Saturday, the freshman earned the save in Behrend's game one-doubleheader victory over Pitt-Greensburg. His day wasn't over, as he then hurled a complete-game in the Lions’ 9-2 win in the night cap. Rohrer also earned a save in Behrend's 6-5 victory over Houghton on Monday afternoon. Rohrer leads the AMCC with a 0.92 ERA in 29.1 innings of work and his three saves are tied for first in the conference. He has struck-out 19 and walked just five thus far in 2014. BEST OF THE REST: Medaille P Erik Balcerzak threw a complete game four hitter against Keuka in a 2-1 loss…La Roche P Tyler Ferguson earned a complete game win over Mt. Aloysius, allowing just one earned run on 4 hits while striking out 12 batters, clinching the AMCC regular season title for the Redhawks…Pitt-Greensburg P Brennan Rahl picked up his fourth win of the season in a 7 inning gem against PS-Altoona, allowing 6 hits, one run and racking up 6 Ks, while also giving a scoreless inning of relief vs. PS-Behrend…With playoff seeding on the line, Mt.     Swope went on a tear last week, helping the Lions to three wins, including splits with AMCC opponents Pitt-Greensburg and Pitt-Bradford, to secure a spot in the post-season. For the week, he batted .550 (11-for-20) with four doubles, one home run, seven RBI, and eight runs scored. He also walked three times and stole one base. Swope's on-base percentage for the week was .609, and he slugged .900. He posted multi-hit games in three of his five contests in the week. BEST OF THE REST: Mt. Aloysius OF Connor Bowie went 5 for 12 with 2 HR and 4 RBI as the Mounties went 2-2 against AMCC foes…Medaille OF Korey Hagen recorded his 100th career hit by going 6 for 18 in an 0-6 week for the Mavericks… Pitt-Greensburg OF Logan Douglas finished the week hitting .478 (11-23) with two doubles, a triple, and a HR, adding 6 RBI and 7 runs scored to his totals…D’Youville IF Garatt Kerr won game 2 versus Hilbert with a 3-run walk-off HR in the 9th inning after coming off the bench to go 3-3 with a HR and 4 RBI…PS-Behrend 1B Nathan Junk had a standout week, hitting .667 with 8 hits and 8 RBI and helping the Lions to 6 wins...La Roche 1B Brian Tougher hit .529 (9 for 17) with a home run, 8 RBI, 8 runs, 3 doubles, and 2 walks in a 4-0 week for the Redhawks.
