The Bobcats overcame Penn St. Altoona in a decisive 5-1 victory Sunday for the program's first ever softball championship.
Despite a late day on Saturday, the Lions started Sunday ready to go, getting on the board in their first at bat. With DP Lauren Davidson and 1B Gianna Hoppel on base, 3B Hanna Lauck arrived safely at first on a fielding error, allowing Davidson to score.
The Bobcats returned the favor in the third. With RF Jadyn Davis and 3B Shelby Cloak waiting on base, C Jessica Dunn singled up the middle to score Davis, and the game was tied.
UPG struck again in the 4th inning as LF Madyson Hart smacked a triple to score Cassidy Kunkel. Mia Dalessandro's hit into a fielder's choice, allowing Hart to scamper home, and the Bobcats padded their lead to 3-1.
The offensive surge continued in the 6th with Hart nailing a double to left center, advancing to third on an errant throw and allowing DP Sadie Kelly to score and increase the UPG margin to 5-1. From there P Melanie Mienke (9-7) closed out the win in the circle, posting three strikeouts and no earned runs.
The winner will receive the AMCC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament which will be announced Monday. Watch the selection show here.
