MEN'S TENNIS DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SET FOR THIS WEEKEND
The AMCC Men's Tennis Divisional Championship is slated for this weekend, with the winner advancing to the Atlantic East Championship on May 4.
The AMCC Men's Tennis Divisional Championship is slated for this weekend, with the winner advancing to the Atlantic East Championship on May 4. Penn State Altoona and Penn State Behrend each went 5-1 in conference play to be named regular season co-champions. However, it was Penn State Altoona who claimed the #1 seed by virtue of the tiebreaker, winning more individual matches in head-to-head competition. The semifinal round opens up on Saturday, April 26 with #1 Penn State Altoona taking on #4 Pitt-Greensburg, followed by #2 Penn State Behrend and #3 Mount Aloysius College.
Penn State Altoona enters the tournament as the top seed and is looking for their first AMCC title since 2006. Nick Beard leads the conference with a 6-0 record in singles play, playing in the No. 3 slot for the Lions. Andrew Chronister went 5-0 in the No. 2 singles spot with Casey Hess recording a 5-1 record in the No. 1 singles position for the Lions. In doubles play, Beard and Jackson Newell, along with Kadyn Carey and Gabriel Lopez, each went 3-0 for Altoona.
Entering the tournament as the #2 seed, Penn State Behrend is seeking their fourth consecutive conference title. William Thomas carries a 5-0 record at the No. 5 singles position for the Lions. Jonathon Laier went 5-1 at the No. 1 singles spot, while Graham Louis also went 5-1, splitting time between No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Laier and Louis teamed up to go 5-0 at No. 1 doubles while Owen Sinnott and Carson Souser also recorded a 5-0 record in the No. 2 doubles spot.
Mount Aloysius comes into the tournament as the #3 seed with a 2-4 conference record. Tristen Ruffley went 3-3 at the No. 2 singles spot. Doubles partners Hunter Reed and Trent Strous, along with Matthew Franz and Matt Jacobs, each went 2-3 in doubles play.
With an 0-6 record, Pitt-Greensburg rounds out the field as the #4 seed. Jackson Byer earned a win at the No. 6 singles spot.
The AMCC divisional winner will advance to play the Atlantic East Divisional Champion for the Atlantic East Title. The championship match is slated for Sunday, May 4 at the Hershey Racquet Club in Hershey, PA.
