AMCC SOCCER TEAMS BOW OUT OF NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Medaille College men's soccer team matched up this evening with No. 10 Otterbein University in the Division III NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament First Round.
This was Medaille's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2012 and the first trip for head coach Micky Blythe. It was the program's seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Cardinals got on the board in the 12' on a goal from Noah Coons. The play was setup off of a corner kick from the far sideline taken by Pau Piang. As Piang approached to take the corner, the entire Cardinal offense attacked the net and Otterbein defender Zach Lewis got a shot off first. Lewis's shot was deflected by a Medaille defender and then Coons buried the rebound to put the Cardinals up 1-0. The Mavericks' top opportunity of the first half came in the 33' when sophomore forward Lachlan Wilkinson received a pass and ripped a shot from just outside the box but his shot missed wide.
The score remained 1-0 at the conclusion of the first half. Otterbein had decisive edge in shots with a 14-4 advantage with a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Mavericks midfielder Joel Rodwell had a good scoring chance in the (54'), ripping one from the top of the box but it was turned away by Cardinals GK Collin Hoffmann. In the 65', Otterbein found the back of the net for the second time. After a flurry of shots, a Medaille defender tried to clear the ball out of bounds and it resulted in an own goal. Otterbein held on for the 2-0 win and will move on to the second round to play the winner of the game between Kenyon and Transylvania. Medaille was much more active in the offensive zone in the second half of the game. They got off seven shots with three on goal.
