For the first time since 2019, AMCC conference baseball games will kick off this weekend. The season's first AMCC Game of the Week features Penn State Altoona and Alfred State College. The Lions were selected by AMCC coaches in the preseason poll to finish third in conference standings, while the Pioneers were selected to finish fifth.
Penn State Altoona baseball has gotten out to a 2-4 overall start through its first three non-conference doubleheaders of the season. Senior first baseman Catcher Cumming is hitting a team-best .400 (6-for-15) with five runs scored, four RBI, one home run, and one double. Freshman Jake Hillard has also made a strong impression in his first six collegiate games, leading the team in extra-base hits (4) and total bases (15).
After winning their opener the Pioneers have struggled to put all aspects of the game together at the same time. Matteo Avallone leads the team with a .357 batting average (10-for-28) while Justin LoTemple is hitting .300 with two homers and 9 RBI. On the mound, AJ Gartland will be one of the two starters for the series. He has tossed 16.1 innings in three starts this year and has 14 strikeouts. The Pioneers are hoping to get the bats going a little bit more and solidify the pitching and fielding aspects of their game as they open up AMCC play.
