DAY ONE COMPLETE IN AMCC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
Day one of the AMCC Baseball Championship Tournament concludes with #2 Penn State Behrend and #4 Alfred State College picking up wins Friday morning to advance in the winners bracket.
Day one of the AMCC Baseball Championship Tournament concludes with #2 Penn State Behrend and #4 Alfred State College picking up wins Friday morning to advance in the winners bracket. #6 La Roche University went 1-1 on the day, while top seed Mount Aloysius College went 0-2 and has been eliminated from the tournament.
GAME 1:
#4 Alfred State d. #1 Mount Aloysius, 11-2
Ryan Bailey got the start and the win after pitching 9.0 innings, only allowing one earned run on five hits, with five strikeouts. Tyler Korsky went 3-4 on the day with an RBI, while Joshua Gardner, Tyler Petery, and Anthony Snyder came away with two RBI each.
GAME 2:
#2 Penn State Behrend d. #6 La Roche, 5-4
Penn State Behrend opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Mac Ciocco singled then advanced to second on an error. A David Gibson triple to right center plated Ciocco, giving the Lions the 1-0 advantage.
The Redhawk bats heated up in the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits. Junior Brandon Snyder started things off with a walk before Ricky Heyz doubled to left, advancing Snyder to third. Christian Melendez belted a homerun over the left field wall, putting the Redhawks up 3-1. Tanner Schmitt reached on a single then advanced to second with a stolen base. Danny Suarez singled to centerfield, plating Schmitt to give La Roche the 4-1 lead.
Behrend got back on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Silvio Ionadi singled with bases loaded to score Spencer Deitz, making the score 5-2 after five innings of play. The Lions continued to chip away in the bottom of the seventh when Dylan Barnes scored on Ciocco single up the middle, as the Redhwaks hung on to a 4-3 lead going into the eighth.
The Lions turned things up in the bottom of the ninth when when Dietz got to first on a single to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Barnes doubled down the left field line, bringing home Dietz to tie the game at four-all with one out. Curtis King entered the game to pinch run for Barnes, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Ionadi singled up the middle, plating King and giving the Behrend Lions the walk-off, 5-4, win.
GAME 3:
#6 La Roche d. #1 Mount Aloysius, 8-4
The La Roche Redhawks took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on two hits and one error, with Dimitri Gary and Caden Maffitt each recording an RBI. The game remained at 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Mounties' Owen McDermott crossed home plate to make the score 2-1.
La Roche's Brandon Snyder singled to right in the top of the sixth to score Maffitt, increasing the Redhawk lead to 3-1. The Mounties answered in the bottom of the sixth, plating two more runs to tie the game at three-all.
The Redhawks broke the game open in the top of the seventh when they brought in four runs to make the score 7-4. Maffitt brought in the first run of the inning when he singled to second base, scoring Tanner Schmitt. Snyder then drove in two more runs when he singled to right field, plating Casey Jones and Maffitt. A Ricky Heyz hit-by-pitch with bases loaded allowed Christian Melendez to cross home plate to cap the inning.
Mount Aloysius added one more run in the bottom of the seventh and Redhawks matched it in the top of the eighth to set the final, 8-4.
Up Next: The tournament will resume at 10am Saturday morning when #2 Penn State Behrend and #4 Alfred State square off in the winners bracket.
