MEDAILLE, FRANCISCAN ADVANCE TO MEN'S SOCCER SEMIFINALS

Medaille College and Franciscan University each earned first round victories Saturday afternoon to advance to the men's soccer semifinals on Wednesday.

#3 Medaille 1, #6 D'Youville (OT)
The Medaille College Mavericks had plenty of opportunities in regulation to put the game away, but they could not capitalize on those changes. The Mavs out-shot the Spartans 28-3 in regulation, but it was D'Youville freshman goalkeeper Kyle Dick who single handedly kept them in the game, stopping all 13 shots he faced. However, the Mavericks did not waste any time in overtime, putting one home just 51 seconds in, to grab the 1-0 victory. Freshman midfielder Juan Montoya connected on a feed to sophomore Mitchell Ali who took most of the opportunity and found the back of the net. Medaille will travel to #2 Mount Aloysius College on Wednesday for a 12:00 p.m. start.

#4 Franciscan 2, #5 La Roche 1
With Franciscan's win over La Roche, the Barons made school history by winning their first-ever men's soccer playoff game. However, it was La Roche who took the early lead when Pedro Ansede buried a goal in the twelth minute to put the Redhawks up 1-0, a lead they would continue to hold at halftime. Franciscan may have been held to just one shot on goal in the first half, but senior forward Leo Herrmann stepped it up after the break and scored two goals to give the Barons the first round victory. Herrmann's first goal came in the forty-seventh minute when La Roche keeper Abdullah Aljundi made two initial saves before Herrman played the rebound into the back of the net. The slick field aided Franciscan in scoring their second goal of the game in the sixty-eighth minute. The Redhawks tried to clear a ball inside the six-yard box but Herrman intercepted it and lifted it into the top right corner. Franciscan will now face #1 Penn State Behrend on Wednesday for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
