Women’s Soccer Blanks SVC for First Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team put one in the win column for the first time this season, as the Lions posted a 1-0 shutout of non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College on Tuesday evening at Spring Run Stadium.

The Lions (1-4) got a late goal from Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) to break a scoreless tie, helping Penn State Altoona women's soccer achieve its first regular season win since the 2019 season. The goal was Smith's first of her collegiate career.

Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) got the start between the pipes, recording three saves and picking up her first collegiate win and first collegiate shutout.

After a scoreless first half that saw Penn State Altoona and St. Vincent (1-4) even with five shot attempts each, the Lions finally put a goal on the scoreboard at 73:17. Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) sent a pass to the middle of the field in St. Vincent territory, where Smith collected it and fired a shot over the goalkeeper from 25 yards.

The score was enough to put Penn State Altoona over the top, as the Lions hung on to clinch the victory.

Penn State Altoona finished the game with advantages over St. Vincent in shot attempts (11-9), shots on goal (8-3), and corner kicks (7-5).

Smith and McConnell led Penn State Altoona in shot attempts with three apiece. Smith, McConnell, and KK Wolfe (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) each tied for the team-high with two shots on goal.

The Lions will look to keep their momentum going in their next game, a home contest against non-conference opponent Juniata College next Wednesday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m.
