Tigers Fall To Hiram In AMCC Showdown

Hiram, OH – The Wittenberg University men's volleyball team wrapped up their road trip, taking on the Hiram College Terriers, falling 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-22). The Tigers put up a fight in all three sets, posting a .116 hitting percentage on the day with 44 kills on 121 total attacks. Wittenberg was led by Dominic Melchiorre, putting down 13 kills on 21 total attacks, recording a team-high attacking percentage .524 on the day.

Match Breakdown

It was an even battle through the early going, as the Tigers tallied a .200 hitting percentage, putting down 19 kills on 45 total attack attempts. Wittenberg jumped out to a quick 4-2 advantage through the early going in the first set, before Hiram came back to regain the lead midway through the set at 10-8. Hiram would hold onto their lead at 20-15 down the stretch, as the Tigers came storming back, scoring three straight points to bring the set to within two at 23-21. Wittenberg knotted the set back up at 24-24 off a kill from Russell Burke and once again at 25 apiece, coming off the kill from Jackson Tyler. Wittenberg would hang with the Terriers in the second set, posting a .122 hitting percentage, putting down 15 kills on 41 total attacks. The Tigers and Terriers went back and forth in the second set, as the score was knotted up early at 3-3. Hiram took a 12-7 advantage, as Wittenberg came fighting back again to bring the set within one coming off the Hiram error, making it 12-11. The Tigers continued to battle, as Hiram held a 22-16 advantage down the stretch. Wittenberg came rallying back to tie the set at 23-23, coming off the kill from Aiden Hauter. The two sides continued to go back and forth in the third set, as the Tigers battled back to within one, down 12-11. Wittenberg continued to fight down the stretch, during the Cameron Menini service rally, bringing the match to 21-18. An error by the Terriers followed by an offensive rally by the Tigers brought Wittenberg to within one at 23-22, before Hiram closed out the set.

Wittenberg will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 29, traveling to Medaille College for two matches. The Tigers will open the weekend against host Medaille at 10:00 AM before wrapping up the day against D'Youville at 2:00 PM.
