Lions Snap Skid, Sweep Pitt-Bradford

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team snapped its six-game losing streak on Saturday with a dominant sweep of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford at Stewart Athletic Field.

Penn State Altoona (6-12, 4-6 AMCC) took care of business with a 6-1 win in game one, then overpowered Pitt-Bradford (3-9, 2-8 AMCC) by a 17-7 margin in game two.

Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had another banner day for the Lions in game two, setting a new program single game record for the most total bases with 13. He also tied the team's single game record for home runs – a mark he established himself on April 3 – with three homers in the second game of the twinbill.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 6, Pitt-Bradford 1

The Lions got a strong start on the mound and had some timely hits early in the game to establish a lead which they would hold throughout.

Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) had two of Penn State Altoona's seven hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Cumming was 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs batted in, and one run scored, and Jared Ennis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.

Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) was 1-for-2 with a run scored, Anthony Iannizzi (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) was 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Kyle Glass (Imler, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) excelled on the mound for the Lions, picking up his second career win in his second complete game effort. In seven innings, the right-hander limited Pitt-Bradford to just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Nick Stein scored on Kevin Rehak's RBI groundout to third in the top of the first, giving Pitt-Bradford a 1-0 lead.

But Penn State Altoona got two runs across in the bottom of the first to leap ahead, getting an RBI double to center by Ennis and RBI single through the right side from Richard to make it 2-1.

The Lions scored four more runs in the bottom of the second to grow their lead to five. Ennis' sacrifice fly to right plated one run, and Cumming followed with a two-run triple to left. Cumming scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat, and Penn State Altoona led 6-1 by the end of the frame.

Glass and the Lions kept Pitt-Bradford off of the scoreboard for the remainder of the game after the first inning, and Penn State Altoona secured the five-run win.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 17, Pitt-Bradford 7

The Lions' offense produced 17 runs on 19 hits, as three different Penn State Altoona batters finished with four hits each.

Cumming was 4-for-6 with three home runs, seven RBI, and three runs scored. His 13 total bases set a new Penn State Altoona baseball single game record, his three home runs tied his own single game team record, and his total of seven RBI is tied for the third-most in a game in Lions history.

Ennis went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, and two RBI. Richard was also 4-for-5 with one double and three runs scored.

Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk, and Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Breon was 1-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, four RBI, and two walks.

Jake Bradish (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) got the start on the mound and went 3 1/3 innings, taking a no decision. Austin Miller (Orbisonia, PA/Southern Huntingdon) tossed 2/3 inning in relief, and Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) finished the game by going five innings and allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Kitko got the win, the second of the season.

Cumming's solo home run to left put Penn State Altoona on the board in the bottom of the second, and his two RBI single to left-center in the third made it 3-0.

However, Pitt-Bradford surged ahead in the top of the fourth. Rehak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the Panthers' first run of the game, and Stein's two-run single down the right field line tied the score. Back-to-back RBI base hits from Nick Hall and Samuel Dreistadt helped the visitors to a 5-3 advantage.

But the Lions got right back in front in the bottom half of the inning, when Breon's bases-loaded walk and Ennis' two-run single through the left side got Penn State Altoona back into the lead, 6-5.

Matt LaBadie led off the top of the fifth with a home run to center, tying the game 6-6. But the Lions answered quickly again, when an RBI single from Carey put the home team ahead by one in the bottom of the fifth. Richard scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 8-6.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cumming blasted his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left that extended the Lions' advantage to 10-6.

Penn State Altoona blew the game open in the seventh, plating seven runs during the frame. Breon's three-run homer to left-center and Cumming's record-tying two-run homer to right increased the Lions' lead to 15-6. Later in the inning, Hillard scored on a wild pitch and Carey contributed another RBI single to make it 17-6.

Penn State Altoona baseball continues its regular season-ending homestand on Wednesday, April 21, hosting AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
