Lions Dominant in Sweep of Medaille

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team recorded its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference wins of the season on Saturday afternoon at Stewart Athletic Field, sweeping a doubleheader against Medaille College.

Penn State Altoona (4-6, 2-2 AMCC) won game one 13-2, then took the nightcap 12-3. It was a well-rounded effort for the Lions, who scored 25 runs on 31 hits, allowed five runs over the span of 16 innings, and committed just one error on the day.

Penn State Altoona also got a record-setting performance in game two from senior first baseman Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona), who hit three home runs to set a new program record for the most homers in a single game in team history.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 13, Medaille 2

The Lions established a lead early, then broke the game open with a seven-run third inning that helped the team out to a 12-1 advantage.

Tyler Manger (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) started on the mound and produced his strongest appearance of the season. The right-hander went four innings and limited Medaille (0-2, 0-2 AMCC) to a pair of runs on just three hits and no walks. Manger struck out four batters and picked up his first win of the spring.

Adam Wildasin (Hershey, PA/Hershey) tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, giving up no runs, no hits, and one walk while recording one strikeout. Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) pitched a scoreless seventh inning out of the pen.

Jared Ennis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) was 2-for-2 at the plate for Penn State Altoona with a double, two runs batted in, two runs scored, and a walk. Kyle Glass (Imler, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Cumming was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, and Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) finished 1-for-2 with three runs scored, two walks, and two stolen bases. Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) hit 1-for-1 with two RBI and a walk.

Penn State Altoona got four runs across in the bottom of the first inning. Breon walked to lead off the frame, and McClain followed with a base hit to put runners at the corners. During the next at-bat, a double steal resulted in Breon scoring from third for the Lions' first run. Later in the inning, bases-loaded walks drawn by Richard and Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) added two more runs to the home team's total, and Cumming scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Medaille got on the board in the top of the second, when Patrick Whelan led off the frame with a home run to right field.

But the Lions got that run back in the bottom half of the inning, when Breon led off with a single and later scored on Cumming's sacrifice fly to center.

Penn State Altoona proceeded to widen its lead to 11 runs in the third, when the Lions tacked seven more runs on to their total. Brodie Harbaugh (New Paris, PA/Chestnut Ridge) got things started with an RBI single to left, and McClain walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run. Ennis drove in a pair with his double down the left field line, and after Cumming's RBI groundout, Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) knocked in a run with his single through the left side. Richard's RBI base hit to left extended Penn State Altoona's lead to 12-1.

Another long ball from Whelan accounted for Medaille's second and final run of the game, when Whelan's solo homer to right-center made it 12-2.

Penn State Altoona closed the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, when Jake Yokobosky's (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) RBI double to left put his team back up by 11 runs, 13-2.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 12, Medaille 3

Penn State Altoona played to another comfortable win in game two, getting an early lead while riding strong pitching and defense to a nine-run victory.

Cumming had a banner game at the plate and was one of four different Lion hitters to finish with three hits. Cumming was 3-for-5 with a single game record-setting three home runs – one of which was a grand slam – with seven RBI and three runs scored.

Ennis also went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, and a stolen base, and Hillard was 3-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI. Cole Brechbill (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) hit 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

Three other Lions finished with a multi-hit performance in game two. Breon was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, McClain hit 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk, and Richard finished 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.

Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) tallied his first collegiate win on the mound for Penn State Altoona, going six innings and limiting Medaille to three runs while scattering eight hits. He struck out nine batters and issued no walks.

The team's relief pitching was effective again, with Glass, Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra), and Hunter Johnson (Shippensburg, PA/Shippensburg) each tossing one scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

Medaille scored in the top of the first, as Whelan continued his good day for the Mavericks with an RBI single to left-center.

But Penn State Altoona got a big swing to plate four runs in the bottom of the first. The Lions started the frame with three singles in a row from Breon, McClain, and Ennis to load the bases, and Cumming followed by hitting a grand slam to center to make it 4-1.

McClain's RBI single down the right field line in the second increased the Lions' lead to 5-1, and Hillard's RBI double to left in the third made it 6-1.

The Mavericks cut Penn State Altoona's lead to three in the fourth, when Whelan hit his third home run of the day – a two-run shot – to close the gap to 6-3.

But the Lions kept the offense coming and added three runs to their total in the fifth, when Cumming's two-run homer and Brechbill's RBI double to left put the home team ahead by six, 9-3.

Anthony Iannizzi (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) contributed an RBI single in the seventh, and Cumming hit his team-record third homer in the eighth, a solo shot that put Penn State Altoona up 11-3. Later in the eighth, Richard's RBI double grew the Lions' lead to nine, 12-3.

Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball will host non-conference opponent Wilson College for a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field on Thursday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m.
