Women’s Soccer Falls 3-1 in Season Opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team started its 2022 schedule on the road Thursday afternoon, when the Lions suffered a 3-1 loss to non-conference opponent Lycoming College at UPMC Field.

Bella Green's two goals led the way for Lycoming (1-0), which established a 2-1 lead by halftime before adding another goal in the second half.

Jordan Yaletsko (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Academy Charter) scored her first collegiate goal for Penn State Altoona (0-1), while Kelsey Johnson (Stephens City, VA/Sherando) notched her first career assist. Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) recorded 12 saves in goal for the Lions.

Lycoming scored the game's first goal at 12:13, when Bridget Maaloum's through ball up the middle of the field found Bella Green, who dribbled in on goal and scored to make it 1-0. The Warriors made it 2-0 at 30:05, when Rorie Bass Foresman's hard-angle pass from the left of the goal connected with Sydney Sellers, who chipped a shot past the keeper to increase the home team's lead to 2-0.

Penn State Altoona got on the board at 35:05 to cut the Lycoming advantage to one. Kelsey Johnson (Stephens City, VA/Sherando) stole the ball from a Warriors player, then sent a pass from the right side into the middle of the field, where it found Yaletsko. Yaletsko beat the keeper with a shot from inside the box, trimming the Lycoming lead to 2-1.

But the home team reestablished a two-goal lead early in the second half, when Green's penalty kick goal one minute into the period put the Warriors ahead 3-1. The tally ultimately closed the scoring for the game, as Lycoming maintained its two-goal advantage the rest of the way.

Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) finished with two of Penn State Altoona's three shots on goal, with Yaletsko recording the other.

Penn State Altoona women's soccer returns to action this Saturday, September 3, when the Lions will travel to face non-conference opponent Ohio Wesleyan University in a 2:30 p.m. contest hosted at Westminster College.
