Men’s Tennis Earns Championship Berth in Win Over Bobcats

ERIE, Pa. – The No. 2 seed Penn State Altoona men's tennis team overpowered No. 3 seed Pitt-Greensburg 5-0 in Saturday evening's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament semifinal match at Westwood Racquet Club.

With the win, the Lions advance to the AMCC championship match tomorrow, Sunday, April 21. Penn State Altoona will face No. 1 seed Penn State Behrend for the conference title at 1 p.m.

Additionally, freshman Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) made history for the Penn State Altoona men's tennis program, setting a pair of single-season records for the team. Chronister won his singles and doubles matches on Saturday to set new team records for the most singles and doubles wins in a season, finishing the day with 14 victories in each format this year.

Penn State Altoona (11-4) started Saturday's match by winning all three in doubles play. In the No. 1 spot, the duo of Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Chronister earned their team-best 13th victory of the season together with an 8-0 win over their opponents. Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona) followed with an 8-0 victory of their own in the No. 2 match, recording their 10th win together. In the No. 3 match, the pair of Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata)/Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) defeated their opponents 8-3 for their seventh win of the season.

The Lions won two singles matches to end the match at decision, posting a 5-0 whitewash of Pitt-Greensburg (3-8) to advance in the tournament and eliminate the Bobcats. Chronister picked up his team-high 14th singles win of the season in the No. 2 match, where he prevailed 6-0, 6-0. Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) provided the match-clinching point for Penn State Altoona in the No. 5 spot, where he won 6-1, 6-0 for his 10th victory of the season.

Now, Penn State Altoona men's tennis will prepare for a rubber match with Behrend tomorrow, as the teams split their regular season doubleheader on April 14. Behrend won the first match, 6-3, but Penn State Altoona prevailed 5-4 in the second.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis will be in search of its seventh AMCC title in program history and its first since 2006.
