Softball Splits Thursday Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – Penn State Altoona softball posted a loss and a win on Thursday in The Spring Games, losing to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before bouncing back for a victory over Delaware Valley University at Hancock Recreation Complex.

Penn State Altoona (2-8) suffered a rough 15-0 loss to RPI in game one, but the Lady Lions came back with an 11-9 win over Delaware Valley in game two.

After the games, it was announced that Penn State Altoona's spring sports season was suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus spread. The Lady Lions' games on Thursday could be the team's last competitions for a while.

"Nice win to end our trip here in Florida," said Penn State Altoona head coach Joe Merilli. "We put the offense all together and scored a lot of runs. I felt we were on our way to being a good offensive team, and it's a shame we won't be able to continue our season down here tomorrow."

Game One: RPI 15, Penn State Altoona 0

RPI (12-0) limited the Lady Lions to one hit while putting up a big 11-run third innings, en route to a lopsided victory.

Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) had Penn State Altoona's lone hit, going 1-for-2 with a double. Jayde Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) started in the circle and took the loss after pitching two innings, and Olivia Miller (West Newton, PA/Yough) tossed three innings in relief.

RPI scored 11 runs in the top of the third inning, added one run in the fourth, then posted three in the fifth. The Engineers won the game in five innings due to the run-rule.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 11, Delaware Valley 9

Penn State Altoona ended its Florida trip on a winning note, plating 11 runs on 12 hits to defeat Delaware Valley (1-8).

Makenzie Lukehart (Utahville, PA/Glendale) went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, a run batted in, and a walk. Colledge was 2-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, and two RBI.

Kristen Hewitt (Coalport, PA/Glendale) went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, and Abby Showers (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Miller was 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI, two walks, and a run scored.

Lukehart picked up her first collegiate win in the circle, pitching a complete game. In seven innings, she yielded seven earned runs and struck out three.

In the top of the first inning, Showers scored on an error to open the scoring, and another error allowed Colledge to score. Burge's sacrifice fly to left plated Hewitt to make it 3-0.

After Delaware Valley scored two in the bottom of the third to cut Penn State Altoona's lead to two, Colledge hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to increase the Lady Lions' advantage to 5-2.

Delaware Valley scored two more runs in the fifth to make it a one-run game, but Penn State Altoona got six runs across in the top of the seventh to grab a big 11-4 advantage. Miller hit a two-run home run, followed by Showers' RBI single, Lukehart's RBI double, and Hewitt's two-run single.

Delaware Valley scored five runs in the bottom half of the seventh to make things close, but Penn State Altoona hung on to earn the victory.
