Women's Basketball Edged in Season Opener

Bethany. W Va. – The Bethany College women's basketball team opened their season at home against the Franciscan Barons in a non-conference match Saturday evening inside Hummel Field House. The Bison's comeback fell short to the Barons, 52-49. Sophomore Kelsie Meintel led the Bison with 13 points and nine boards, former high school teammate Courtney Walker added 11 points for the Green and White.

GAME OVERVIEW

Bethany struck first with a layup from Kelsie Meintel giving the Bison the early lead. The Bison held the lead throughout the first quarter. The Barons clawed to stay in the game. The Bison struggled to find the basket in the first quarter shooting 28.6 percent from the field. Bethany held onto a one point lead at the end of one, 12-11.

Franciscan opened up the second quarter with back to back jumpers to take a 15-12 lead over Bethany. A Taiven Clark layup cut the deficit to 15-14 and Meintel layup gave the Bison the lead at 16-15. The Barons and Bison exchanged buckets with the Green and White extending their lead to 22-18 off of a Haylie Glass shot from behind the arc. Bethany led 24-18 at the half.

In the second half, the Bison and Barons scrapped back and forth with the Bison leading 34-32 at the end of three. In the fourth quarter it was a battle and the Bison weren't backing down. The Barons knotted the game at 34-34 and ended up taking the lead at 39-37. With under five minutes to go, the Bison trailed 48-44, after Meintel laid one in. The Bison continued to cut the lead but the Barons would find a way to answer. A Glass layup cut the lead to 51-49 but the Bison were unable to complete the comeback.

Bethany College hits the road on Tuesday, November 12 when they travel to Meadville, Pa for a non-conference tilt against Allegheny at 7 pm.
