Softball Posts Senior Day Sweep of Pitt-Greensburg

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona softball team finished its regular season schedule in winning fashion on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg in a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field.

Penn State Altoona (19-11, 11-3 AMCC) earned an 8-0, run-rule-shortened victory in game one of the twinbill, then overcame a 3-1 deficit in game two to defeat Pitt-Greensburg (9-23, 5-7 AMCC) on a walk-off, 4-3.

Between games, the Lions held their senior day ceremony and recognized senior outfielders Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) and Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola).

Game One: Penn State Altoona 8, Pitt-Greensburg 0 (Final/5 innings)

The Lions clicked on all cylinders in game one of the doubleheader, blanking Pitt-Greensburg for a five-inning win. Penn State Altoona produced 12 hits as a team, limited the Bobcats to just one hit, and played error-free ball.

Madison Peters (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) pitched a complete game to notch her 12th win of the season. The right-hander allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out four batters in her five innings of work.

Colledge finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs batted in, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored.

Penn State Altoona grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) started the frame with a walk and Colledge followed with a single to left, a one-out, two-run double to right-center field by Feathers put the Lions on the board. One batter later, Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) came through with a two-out RBI double to right center to make it 3-0.

Penn State Altoona struck again for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Singles by Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) and Fisher put two runners aboard, and Colledge drove both of them in with her double to center. Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) increased the home team's lead to 7-0 with her RBI single up the middle.

The Lions ended the game early when they picked up their eighth run in the bottom of the fifth. Walks drawn by Peters and Fisher put two runners on base for Penn State Altoona with one out. Colledge came next with a base hit to left, and an error on the left fielder during the play allowed Peters to score and give the Lions an eight-run rule victory.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 4, Pitt-Greensburg 3

The second game of the doubleheader followed a different script, with Pitt-Greensburg leading for much of the game while the Lions struggled to string together hits to produce runs. But Penn State Altoona was able to battle back from a 3-1 deficit, tying the game in the fifth and ultimately winning on a walk-off single by Lauck in the bottom of the seventh.

Feathers went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base, and Lauck was 2-for-4 with two RBI – including the game-winner – and a stolen base. Lucas and Storm each walked twice, with Storm stealing three bases and Lucas swiping two bags.

Fisher got the start in the pitching circle and finished with a no decision, going 4 1/3 innings and yielding three runs. Peters entered in relief and recorded her 13th victory, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless frames and striking out five Bobcat hitters while allowing only two hits.

Penn State Altoona scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first, thanks to a big two-out hit. With Colledge at second and two down, Feathers tripled to center to plate the Lions' first score.

Pitt-Greensburg capitalized in a two-out situation of their own in the top of the third to score its first runs of the day and grab its first lead. With two runners in scoring position, DJ Diodato drove in both with her single to right, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage.

The visitors manufactured a run in the top of the fifth to expand their lead to 3-1. Ava Martin led off with a base hit, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, and went to third base on Diodato's single. With runners at the corners, Pitt-Greensburg successfully executed a double steal, and Martin stole home to give the Bobcats a two-run lead.

Penn State Altoona responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. With one out, Feathers reached on a single up the middle, then stole second and took third on a throwing error. Storm reached on a fielder's choice on the next play, and Lauck's RBI single to center scored Feathers to cut the Pitt-Greensburg lead to one. Storm and Lauck both moved into scoring position on a double steal, and Lucas picked up the game-tying RBI with her groundout to first, evening the score at 3-3.

The Lions completed their comeback by scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh. Hoppel led off with a triple to right field, and two batters later, Lauck's RBI single to right provided the game-winning hit for Penn State Altoona, which capped its regular season schedule with a walk-off victory.

Now, Penn State Altoona will await results from the remaining regular season games around the AMCC to determine what seed the team will get for the upcoming conference postseason tournament. The AMCC Tournament kicks off on Thursday, May 11 and runs through Saturday, May 13, hosted by the number one seed in the field.
