Women’s Tennis Caps AMCC Schedule With 6-3 Win

EBENSBURG, Pa. – Playing in its final Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match of the regular season, the Penn State Altoona women's tennis team grabbed a 6-3 victory over nearby conference rival Mount Aloysius College at the Ebensburg Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions (3-5, 3-2 AMCC) won two out of three doubles matches to open the day with a one-point lead. In the No. 1 doubles spot, Mikhaela Merca (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin)/Rachel Stricek (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) earned their fourth win together this season with an 8-5 victory. The tandem of Stephanie Swain (Yadkin County, NC/Forbush)/Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) swept their opponents by a score of 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles match to record their team-best fifth doubles win of the season.

In singles, Penn State Altoona took four out of six to deal Mount Aloysius (2-4, 1-3 AMCC) the loss. Merca picked up her team-high fourth singles win of the season in the No.1 match, where she defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-1, and Swain nabbed her third win of the fall in No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Lydia Irvin (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 slot for her second win of the season, and Rhoades also triumphed 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 match to get her third win of the year.

Penn State Altoona women's tennis gets back to non-conference play in its next match, when the Lions will host Westminster College this Monday, October 3 at home for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
