Behrend Blanks Men’s Soccer 5-0

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team returned home for the first time since September 24 on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of visiting Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Penn State Behrend.

Behrend (9-2-4, 3-0-1 AMCC) established control from the onset, putting three goals on the board over the first 8:33 of the game. The visitors ended the day with a 25-3 advantage in total shot attempts.

Penn State Altoona (3-7, 1-3 AMCC) got eight saves from Alexander Ferry (Warren, PA/Warren), who made his ninth start of the season at goalkeeper.

Behrend scored its first goal at 5:18. Following a deflection in front of the goal, Johnathan Swann tapped a pass to the middle of the box, where John Ziobro sent a shot into the net from 12 yards to put his team on top, 1-0.

Behrend struck again just over two minutes later to double its lead. After a foul in the Penn State Altoona end gave Behrend a free kick opportunity, Nick Laskey capitalized by placing a shot into the top right corner of the goal, making it 2-0 at 7:55.

The visitors scored again just 38 seconds later, when Cole Thomas dribbled along the left end line and fired the ball in front of the net, where it deflected off of a defender and into the goal to increase the Behrend lead to 3-0.

Ziobro scored once more before the conclusion of the first half, notching his second goal of the game and upping the Behrend advantage to four goals by the intermission. Zak Schwarzel set up Ziobro in the middle of the field, and a shot was sent into the goal from 30 yards out at 24:20 to give Behrend a 4-0 lead.

The visitors added one more goal to their total during the second half. Brock Kiefer's long throw-in from the left sideline skipped into the box, where Mason Le headed it past the keeper at 65:36 to give Behrend a 5-0 advantage.

Garrett Giedroc (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle), Jonathan Hill (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove), and Cameron McCarthy (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) each had shot attempts for Penn State Altoona.

Penn State Altoona hosts another AMCC contest this upcoming Wednesday, October 19, when the Lions will take on conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg at 6:00 p.m.
