Second Half Goals Power Lions Past La Roche 2-1

ALTOONA, Pa. - Two second half goals propelled the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team to its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory of the season on Tuesday evening, as the Lions topped La Roche College 2-1 at Spring Run Stadium.

Jacob Weaver (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) scored his first goal of the season for Penn State Altoona (2-7, 1-1 AMCC), while Deontae Mosley (Houston, TX/Hylton) notched his first collegiate goal. Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made seven saves in goal for the Lions to pick up the win.

La Roche (4-6, 1-1 AMCC) came out strong early in the first half and scored less than three minutes into the game. After a shot by La Roche was saved, the ball skipped to Tom Spagnolo, who chipped it into the net at 2:33 to put the Redhawks up 1-0.

But Penn State Altoona was able to stay in the game and even the momentum by halftime. The Lions capitalized on that momentum in the second half, when they rallied to score a pair of goals.

A foul allowed Seth Murrelle (Sayre, PA/Sayre) to set up for a free kick from outside the box on the right side of the field, and Murrelle sent a well-placed ball into the box, where Weaver headed it into the goal from five yards out to tie the score 1-1 at 62:42.

Penn State Altoona jumped ahead 2-1 at 74:20, when Mosley's corner kick deflected off of the La Roche keeper and into the net.

The Lions held off La Roche for the remainder of the game to secure the conference win.

La Roche held a narrow 17-16 advantage in shots, as well as a 9-4 lead in shots on goal. The Redhawks also led 7-3 in corner kicks.

Lions soccer returns to action this Thursday, September 28 when it travels to non-conference opponent Juniata College for a 7:30 p.m. game.
