Softball Swept by Behrend in Saturday Doubleheader

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona softball team hit the road for a pair of games against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend on Saturday afternoon.

Penn State Behrend (17-17, 10-2 AMCC) pulled out wins in both contests, overcoming Penn State Altoona (19-19, 9-3 AMCC) leads in both games to win by scores of 6-3 and 7-4 and end the Lions' 10-game winning streak.

Game One: Penn State Behrend 6, Penn State Altoona 3

Down 2-0 early, Penn State Altoona came back to hold a 3-2 advantage through five innings. But a four-run sixth by Behrend ultimately upended the Lions, as the home team won by three.

Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) went 3-for-4 at the plate for Penn State Altoona. Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) was 2-for-4 with her second home run of the season, three runs batted in, and a run scored, Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, and Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) also finished 2-for-3.

Madison Peters (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) pitched a complete game in the loss, tossing all six frames for the Lions.

Behrend scored the game's first runs in the bottom of the second inning, getting an RBI triple from Sierra Williams and a sacrifice fly from Emi Curcio.

Penn State Altoona cut its deficit in half with one swing of the bat in the fourth, when Colledge led off the inning with a home run to left to make it 2-1.

The Lions made Behrend pay for a key two-out error in the top of the fifth, when Penn State Altoona scored two runs to take its first lead of the game. After Lucas led off the frame with a double to right center, Behrend got a fly out and strikeout to get to two outs in the inning. But an infield error allowed Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) to reach safely, and after she stole second to put two runners in scoring position, Colledge drove both in with her two-RBI single to center that gave the Lions a 3-2 advantage.

Penn State Altoona's lead held up until the bottom of the sixth, when Behrend rallied for four. Jocelyn McNany's RBI single tied the game at 3-3, and Williams hit her second triple of the game to drive in two more runs and give the home team the lead. Curcio's RBI double to left center made it 6-3, and Behrend held Penn State Altoona off of the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to clinch the game-one win.

Game Two: Penn State Behrend 7, Penn State Altoona 4

The Lions worked their way out to a 2-1 lead through two-and-a-half innings, but Behrend produced a four-run bottom of the third to grab the lead, which the home team never relinquished.

Colledge went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored, and Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.

Fisher started in the circle and took the loss after going two innings, and Peters finished the game by pitching four innings.

Behrend went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on Meghan Petitte's RBI single, but Penn State Altoona leapt ahead in the top of the third. Fisher reached on a one-out base hit to center, and Colledge followed with an RBI double to left center to knot the score at 1-1. One batter later, Feathers' RBI triple to right center gave Penn State Altoona a 2-1 lead.

Behrend struck back with four runs in the bottom of the third. Petitte's RBI double tied the score, and Curcio's two-run double put the home team on top. Lexi Edgett's RBI base hit capped the scoring in the frame, putting Behrend up 5-2.

Penn State Altoona narrowed its deficit to one in the top of the sixth. Feathers started the inning with a double down the left-field line, and Storm's one-out single to left put runners at the corners. Lucas' sac fly to left plated Feathers, and Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) followed with a single to left center. An outfield error by Behrend on Maynard's hit allowed Storm to score, and the Lions ended the inning down by one, 5-4.

But Behrend created some breathing room for its lead in the bottom of the sixth, using an RBI single by Williams and a sac fly to by Curcio to make it 7-4. The home team held its ground in the seventh, and Penn State Altoona was handed the doubleheader sweep.

Penn State Altoona softball returns home to close out its regular season schedule, as the Lions will host AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg for a doubleheader on Saturday, May 6 at 1 p.m.
