Men’s Tennis Sweeps Panthers in Tripleheader

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team faced Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford for a trio of matches on Sunday, with the Lions coming away with a victory in each one.

Penn State Altoona (8-2, 3-2 AMCC) swept the first match 9-0, defeated Pitt-Bradford (0-10, 0-8 AMCC) 5-0 in the second match, and won 6-0 in the third. The day's first two matches both count toward the teams' AMCC records, with the third one officially counted as a non-conference match.

Match One: Penn State Altoona 9, Pitt-Bradford 0

Penn State Altoona posted a dominant performance in the day's first AMCC match against Pitt-Bradford, surrendering just three games to the Panthers out of a combined three doubles and six singles matches.

In doubles play, the pairs of Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park)/Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona), Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Ethan Schneider (Broad Top, PA/Tussey Mountain), and Javier Pozo (Peru/The Southern Cross School)/Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) all won their matches by scores of 8-0. It marked the fourth wins of the season for the teams of Toth/Hess and Pozo/Hibbs, and it was the third win together for Beard/Schneider.

Penn State Altoona continued its dominance in singles. Toth won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot for his fourth victory of the season, and Hess blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles for his sixth win. Beard prevailed 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles for his sixth victory, and Hibbs whitewashed his opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 slot for his fifth triumph. Schneider also shut out his opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 match for his sixth win of the season, and Parth Raval (Mumbai, India/Thakur Polytechnic) earned his first collegiate singles win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 match.

Match Two: Penn State Altoona 5, Pitt-Bradford 0

The teams' second AMCC match was played to decision, with Penn State Altoona clinching a 5-0 victory after three wins in doubles and two in singles.

In No. 1 doubles, Toth/Hess recorded their fifth win of the season with an 8-1 victory, and in the No. 2 doubles spot, Beard/Schneider also won 8-1 for their fourth win together. In No. 3 doubles, Hibbs/Raval recorded their second victory of the season with an 8-0 triumph.

Penn State Altoona sealed a match win by prevailing in the first two singles matches to finish. Pozo notched his fourth singles win of the season in the No. 6 match, blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Hibbs clinched the match win for the Lions with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 4 spot for his sixth singles win of the season.

Match Three: Penn State Altoona 6, Pitt-Bradford 0

Penn State Altoona and Pitt-Bradford's third and final match of the day went as a non-conference contest and was again played to decision. The Lions swept doubles play for a third time while winning three singles matches.

In doubles, Hess/Toth notched their third victory of the day and sixth of the season with an 8-1 triumph in the No. 1 spot. Beard/Schneider combined for an 8-1 win in the No. 2 match for their third win of the day and fifth of the season. In No. 3 doubles, the duo of Hibbs/Pozo got their fifth victory of the season together with an 8-0 decision over their opponents.

In singles, Pozo recorded his fifth win of the year with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 match. The No. 2 and No. 5 matches ended simultaneously for the Lions, as Hess prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 for his seventh win and Schneider won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 for his seventh victory.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis returns to action tomorrow, Monday, April 3, hitting the road again to take on non-conference opponent Lycoming College in a match beginning at 6:30 p.m.
