Women’s Soccer Posts Senior Night Shutout of La Roche

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team helped honor its senior class with a 3-0 shutout victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent La Roche University on Tuesday evening at Spring Run Stadium.

The Lions held their Senior Night prior to the start of the game, recognizing senior players Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford), Cierra Rhodes (Altoona, PA/Altoona), and Kilee Snyder (Fishertown, PA/Chestnut Ridge).

Katelyn Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills), Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), and McConnell each scored goals for the Lions (6-6, 4-1 AMCC), and KK Wolfe (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville), Hannah Brubaker (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch), and Anaya Phillips (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) each tallied an assist.

Jadyn Michael (Berwick, PA/Berwick) got the nod at goalkeeper for Penn State Altoona and made four saves to record her second win of the season and her first collegiate shutout.

Penn State Altoona took just 1:15 to come up with the game's first goal. Wolfe passed the ball to the left side of the field, where Russell took it and dribbled to the left corner of the box. From there, she sent a one-hop shot to the goal that found its way into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

The Lions doubled their lead just under four minutes later. Brubaker fired a ball into the box, where it deflected off of the goalkeeper and came to Smith, who tapped a short shot into the open net at 4:54 for her sixth goal of the season.

Penn State Altoona nursed its two-goal lead until tacking one more on to its total late in the second half. Phillips set up McConnell with a pass in the middle of the field several yards outside of the box, where McConnell fired a long shot into the top right corner of the goal at 87:02 to increase the Lions' lead to 3-0.

Penn State Altoona finished the night by outshooting La Roche (4-7-1, 2-1-1) by a 25-8 margin in shot attempts and an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. The teams were tied 5-5 in corner kicks.

McConnell led all players in the game with six shot attempts and four shots on goal. Russell had three shot attempts with two on goal, and Smith recorded two shot attempts, putting both of them on target.

Penn State Altoona travels to face AMCC opponent Pitt-Bradford in its next game, as the Lions will face off against the Panthers this Saturday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m.
