Lions Blank Pitt-Greensburg 9-0 for Tenth Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team recorded its 10th overall win of the season, as well as its fourth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory, when the Lions defeated conference foe Pitt-Greensburg 9-0 on Wednesday evening at the Adler Tennis Courts.

For Penn State Altoona (10-3, 4-2 AMCC), the win gives the Lions the regular season sweep of Pitt-Greensburg (2-9, 2-6 AMCC).

Penn State Altoona opened the match by sweeping doubles play to establish a 3-0 lead. In the No. 1 doubles spot, the pair of Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park)/Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) prevailed 8-2. The duo of Ethan Schneider (Broad Top, PA/Tussey Mountain)/Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) won 8-5 in No. 2 doubles, and Javier Pozo (Peru/The Southern Cross School)/Parth Raval (Mumbai, India/Thakur Polytechnic) earned an 8-6 victory in No. 3 doubles. The wins were the first of the season together for each of the three doubles pairs.

Penn State Altoona carried its momentum into singles play, where the Lions won all six matches to shut out Pitt-Greensburg. Toth won his fifth singles match of the season at No. 1, where he defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-4. Beard notched his eighth victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph in the No. 2 spot, and Hibbs won 6-0, 6-2 in No. 3 singles to record his eighth win. In the No. 4 match, Schneider prevailed 7-5, 6-2 to tie for the Lions' team lead in overall singles wins with nine. Pozo and Raval pulled out tiebreak wins in the No. 5 and 6 matches, as Pozo triumphed 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the No. 5 spot for his seventh victory, while Raval topped his opponent 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 in the No. 6 match for his second win.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis hosts its final home match of the regular season this Friday, April 14, when the Lions take on non-conference opponent Geneva College at 4:30 p.m.
