Men’s Tennis Sweeps Bobcats for First AMCC Win

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team got its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win of the season under its belt on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions blanked league opponent Pitt-Greensburg 9-0.

Penn State Altoona (3-1, 1-1 AMCC) swept the doubles portion of the match by recording a trio of decisive wins, and the Lions proceeded to claim victory in all six singles matches to seal the nine-point match win over Pitt-Greensburg (2-5, 2-2 AMCC).

In the No. 1 doubles match, the pair of Joey Toth (South Park, PA/South Park)/Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) handled their opponents by a final score of 8-1 to pick up their second doubles win of the season together. In the No. 2 doubles spot, the duo of Ethan Schneider (Broad Top, PA/Tussey Mountain)/Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) prevailed 8-3 for their first doubles victory. The team of Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata)/Javier Pozo (Peru/The Southern Cross School) wrapped up doubles play with an 8-2 triumph in the No. 3 match for their first win together.

In singles, Toth started the lineup with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 1 slot for his second singles victory of the season, and Hess followed with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of his opponent in the No. 2 match for his third win of the year. Beard recorded his third singles win of the season by defeating his opponent 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 3 match, and Hibbs pulled out a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-5 victory in the No. 4 spot for his second win of the season. Schneider notched his third singles victory of the year with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win in the No. 5 match, and Pozo earned his second win with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of his opponent in No. 6 singles.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis returns to action on Saturday, March 25, when the Lions will travel to Erie to face AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend in a match starting at 3 p.m.
