Men’s Tennis Sweeps Pitt-Greensburg, Advances to AMCC Title Match

ERIE, Pa. – The No. 1 seed Penn State Altoona men's tennis team punched its ticket to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Division Championship match on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions earned a 5-0 victory over No. 4 seed Pitt-Greensburg in a semifinal-round match at the Westwood Racquet Club.

With its victory, Penn State Altoona (11-5) will face No. 2 Penn State Behrend for the AMCC Championship tomorrow, Sunday, April 27, at 1 p.m. in Erie. The winner of that match moves on to play the Atlantic East conference champion next Sunday, May 4, in Hershey, Pa., for the joint AMCC-Atlantic East championship.

The Lions put together a dominant win over Pitt-Greensburg (1-13) in Saturday's AMCC semifinal contest, as Penn State Altoona did not lose a set on the day.

The Lions began the afternoon with a pair of commanding wins in doubles play. In the No. 1 doubles match, the duo of Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) earned their sixth win of the season together with a 6-0 triumph over their opponents. At No. 2, Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Gabriel Lopez (Wilmette, IL/New Trier Township) also prevailed 6-0 for their fourth win of the season. Penn State Altoona won the No. 3 doubles match by forfeit, and the Lions carried a 1-0 lead into the singles portion of the match.

In singles, Penn State Altoona recorded wins in the No. 2, 3, 4, and 6 spots to reach the 5-0 match decision. In No. 2 singles, Chronister blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 for his 10th win of the season. Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford) followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash in the No. 3 singles match for his 10th victory, and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) shut out his opponent by a 6-0, 6-0 mark in the No. 4 match for his team-leading 11th win of the season. The Lions' fourth point of singles came via a forfeit win in the No. 6 spot.

Now, Penn State Altoona men's tennis will play in the AMCC Championship match for the fourth year in a row. The Lions are in search of their seventh-ever conference title and first since 2006.
