Men’s Soccer settles for tie to start 2023 season

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University men's soccer opened the 2023 season with 3-3 tie against Penn State Greater Allegheny Friday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.

The Celtics led, 3-1, in the second half, but fouls and cards late in the game allowed the Nittany Lions (0-1-2) to make a return.

Carlow started off strong when Ian Wohlfarth sent a ball ahead from midfield for Sudesh Tiwari, who maneuvered around a defender and found the back of the net in the 22nd minute.

Carlow led 1-0 after halftime, but the Lions would tie it up just 10 minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal by Joshua Nealey.

Gavin Moore scored on a corner kick at 60' to give Carlow a 2-1 advantage, and Konner Sayre found Walt Kada in the box at 64' to put the Celtics up, 3-1.

Just minutes later, Ethan Haught set up Nealey for his second goal of the game to cut Carlow's lead to one.

The Celtics played down a man after a red card in the 73rd minute, and ended up down two after an athlete garnered a second yellow in the 74th.

Greater Allegheny scored its game-tying goal in the 83rd minute on an unassisted shot from Ryan Newton.

The Celtics out-shot the Nittany Lions, 10-5, in the second half and held a narrow 4-3 corner kick advantage.

Carlow goalkeeper Kevin Garcia made five saves in the complete game effort.

The Celtics travel to Louisburg (N.C.) College for an exhibition game Sept. 4.
