
Pioneers Hand 2-0 Loss to Men’s Soccer
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team played its first home Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest of the season on Saturday afternoon at Spring Run Stadium, where visiting league foe Alfred State College posted a 2-0 victory over the Lions.
After a scoreless first half, Alfred State (9-3, 3-0 AMCC) put two goals on the board in the second period to establish the lead. Meanwhile, the Pioneers limited Penn State Altoona (1-6, 0-2 AMCC) to four shot attempts and one shot on goal to deal the Lions a shutout loss.
Sasha Mohoruk (State College, PA/State College) made his seventh start of the season between the pipes for Penn State Altoona and made eight saves.
Giovanny Furbino (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) attempted two shots for the Lions, and Matias Harte (State College, PA/State College) and Owen Myers (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) had one shot apiece, with Harte's shot landing on target.
Alfred State ran up a 16-0 advantage in shots during the first half, but Penn State Altoona held the fort to keep the visitors off of the board, settling for a 0-0 score at halftime.
However, the Pioneers scored the day's first goal just under two minutes into the second half. Travis Scandalis sent a cross into the box, where Liam Hyatt's short-range header shot beat the keeper at 46:43.
Alfred State tacked an insurance goal on to its total at 73:31, when Will Leahy took a pass from Henry Leahy and scored on a shot from inside the box to make it 2-0.
Penn State Altoona men's soccer remains at home for its next game, as the Lions will host AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday, October 9. The start time for that matchup is 7 p.m., moved from the originally-scheduled time of 4 p.m.
