Five Men’s Basketball players record double figures in loss to Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Five Carlow University men's basketball players recorded double figures in a 93-83 AMCC loss at Hilbert College Saturday.

The Celtics (3-7, 1-3 AMCC) shot 54.4 percent (31 for 57) from the field, but it was not enough to overcome the Hawks (8-2, 4-0 AMCC).

Byron Gaskins went 7 for 8 from the line to lead Carlow with 20 points.

Galen Waters and Nehemiah Brazil scored 15 points apiece, with Brazil adding four assists and a steal.

Riley Comforti scored 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench, picking up three steals, two assists and a block, while Oscar Contreras contributed 10 points.

It was a back-and-forth game to start, with the Celtics holding a marginal lead over the Hawks through five minutes early on.

A three-pointer put Hilbert ahead, but a jumper from Gaskins quickly tied it up again.

Neither team would score for over a minute and a half before another trey put the Hawks ahead, 25-19.

Carlow matched the Hawks shot for shot, but Hilbert pulled away to lead by 11 with five minutes remaining in the half.

The Celtics trailed, 48-33, with under three minutes left to play, but held the Hawks scoreless the remainder of the half, going on an 8-0 run to head into halftime down seven.

Hilbert pushed its lead to 12 early in the second half, but the Celtics battled on. Back-to-back treys from Contreras kept Carlow with a four-point margin with less than five minutes left on the clock, but the Hawks stayed ahead and held on for the win.

Both teams tallied eight treys apiece, with Hilbert outrebounding the Celtics, 37-28.

The Hawks held narrow margins over the Celtics in other statistical categories, including points in the paint (36-32) and points off the bench (36-33).

Hilbert's Quran Briggs scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Hawks. Three other Hilbert players added double figures in the win.

Carlow travels to Bryant & Stratton College Buffalo for a 2 p.m. nonconference game tomorrow.
