  • AMCC MEN'S BASKETBALL GAME OF THE WEEK: LA ROCHE @ PITT-GREENSBURG

    The AMCC Men's Basketball Game of the Week is a showdown between the top two teams in the conference, as the first place La Roche University (17-6, 17-1 AMCC) Redhawks travel to Greensburg, PA to take on the second place Pitt-Greensburg (20-4, 16-3 AMCC) Bobcats in the final week of the regular season.

    Frederick helped the Redhawks go 2-0 on the week and secure the number one seed in the AMCC championship tournament for the third year in a row. In an 82-75 victory against Franciscan on Wednesday, Frederick put up big numbers with 28 points and tied his career-high with 19 rebounds, picking up his conference-leading 14th double-double of the season (T-8th in D-III). Later in the week, Frederick led the Redhawks to a comeback win at Hilbert College with a team-high 19 points and contributed four rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. On the week, Frederick averaged 23.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 70% (16-23) from the floor, 55.6% (5-9) from deep and a perfect 10-10 at the free throw line.

    The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg men's basketball team defeated Medaille College, 86-77, on Saturday afternoon inside Chambers Hall.

    Martineau led the Hawks to a 2-0 week and back into fourth place in the AMCC title race. In Wednesday night's 86-72 win at D'Youville College - the 5'10 PG scored 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting, and registered 8 assists and 5 steals. The conference's current assist leader was dominant in a 70-68 redemption victory over Mount Aloysius College on Saturday. Martineau poured in 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished for 10 assists to earn his second triple-double of the 2019-20 season. Martineau is just the third player nationally to register two or more this season.

    Kusters had an outstanding week for the Lions, who went 2-0 with a pair of big AMCC wins. In Wednesday night's road win at AMCC opponent Franciscan, Kusters tied his career-high with 27 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists, and one steal. He went an impressive 10-for-14 from the field in the game, including going 7-for-8 from three-point range. His three-point percentage of 87.5 percent set a new Penn State Altoona men's basketball single game record, and his total of seven made threes is tied for the fifth-most three-pointers made in a single game in team history. In Saturday's victory at home over AMCC foe Medaille, Kusters tied for the team-high in points with 19 while adding seven rebounds, a team-leading four assists, and one steal. On the week, he averaged 23.0 points per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the field overall and 60.0 percent from three-point range. He also grabbed 6.5 rebounds per game, dished out 4.5 assists per game, and averaged 1.0 steal per game.

    Smith continued his strong play for the Mavs this past week. He once again averaged a double-double over a two game stretch, while also grabbing his 667th rebound as a Mav, putting him in first place all-time rebounding in Medaille men's basketball history. In the school's pivotal win over Hilbert, Smith had 26 points and completed the double-double with a massive 16 rebounds. As the team traveled down to La Roche, Smith did not skip a beat, scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds against the Redhawks. For the week, Smith averaged 24.0 points and 13.5 rebounds.

    Darrell had an incredible week for the Spartans, helping lead them to three consecutive wins. Darrell had a big game on Saturday against Franciscan, as he scored a then career-high 22 points on 63.6% shooting from the field with five rebounds and five assists in the 94-87 win. He followed that up with a career game with a new career-high 24 points, tied a career-high with 14 assists, and eight rebounds with three steals and two blocks. Darrell went 10-for-14 from the field and 3-for-3 from three, as he was the driving force behind the team's win. For the week, Darrell averaged 17.3 points, 8.3 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in three games.
  • HILBERT'S MARTINEAU REACHES 1,000 POINT CAREER MILESTONE

    Hilbert College senior guard Hunter Martineau became the 15th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 point career milestone while finishing with 20 points, five assists and three steals in a 69-65 loss to Penn State Behrend.

    The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team travels to Hamburg, NY on Wednesday night to face the Hilbert Hawks in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Men's Basketball Game of the Week at 6:00 p.m. Behrend and Hilbert are tied for third place in conference standings with identical 6-2 records.

    Palacio led the Mounties to an impressive two wins against D'Youville and Hilbert during the week, as part of their current three-game win streak. He averaged a double-double for the week, with 24 points in each game and 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. While recording his double-doubles, he also shot 62.5% from the field and 54.5% from deep, going 6-for-11 on the week. In Saturday's win against Hilbert, Palacio also registered five blocks and three assists.

    The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) awarded the Division III National Player of the Week honor to La Roche University junior forward Tyler Frederick of the Redhawk men's basketball team on Tuesday afternoon.

    Frederick led the Redhawks to their fifth straight win putting up 30 points for the second straight contest Saturday afternoon in a 90-79 victory over D'Youville. Frederick shot 11-of-18 (61%) from the field and reeled in a conference season-high 19 rebounds, picking up his sixth double-double of the season (1st in AMCC, T-24th in D-III). The AMCC Preseason Player of the Year also added two blocks and two assists to the box score. Frederick currently leads the conference in points per game (21.4) and rebounds per game (12.3). His rebounds per game mark is eighth best among all D-III men's basketball players. La Roche improved to 6-0 in AMCC action after Saturday's victory.

    Frederick helped the Redhawks improve to 5-0 in AMCC play and move to the top spot in the conference standings. In two games, the Butler native averaged 28.5 points per game, 12.0 rebounds per game and 2.0 steals per game, recording double-doubles in both contests. Against Mt. Aloysius on 12/18, Frederick scored 21 of his 23 total points in the second half to lift LRU over the Mounties, 78-62. In the AMCC game of the Week against Pitt Greensburg, the battle of undefeated conference opponents, Frederick scored a career-high 34 points shooting 15 of 21 (71%) from the field in an 89-73 black and red victory. Frederick's 15 made field goals against the Bobcats are a conference season-high.

In Wednesday night's victory over Mount Aloysius, he finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals. In Saturday afternoon's win over D'Youville, Gardner-Nicholson had a season-high 24 points while also totaling 13 rebounds and two blocks. On the week, he averaged 19.5 points per game, 12.5 rebounds per game, 3.0 blocks per game, and 1.0 steal per game. He shot an outstanding 81.8% from the field, going 18-for-22. Gardner-Nicholson now ranks sixth among all Division III players nationally in field goal percentage (71.4%), and he has been a major part of the team moving into fourth place among all DIII teams in blocks per game (6.6).

    Johnson started both games for Pitt-Greensburg this past week, where he propelled the Bobcats to conference wins over both Penn State Altoona and D'Youville. With the wins, Pitt-Greensburg is off to its best start in program history (6-1) since the Bobcats joined the NCAA in 1997. In the two wins, Johnson averaged 23.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, shot 56.7% from the field, 56% from three, and hit 7-of-9 from the foul line. In the win over the Lions, Johnson poured in 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting, knocked down 2-of-3 from behind the three-point arc, and hit 3-of-5 from the foul line. Against D'Youville, Johnson tallied 21 points, dished out six assists, made 7-of-15 field goal attempts, knocked down 3-of-6 from three, and connected on all four free-throw attempts.
