DUBOIS, Pa. --- Carlow University softball lost a run-rule contest to No. 1-seed Salem (W. Va.) University in the opening round of the USCAA Small College World Series Monday evening.
The Tigers (25-27) pounded 13 hits and defeated the No. 8-seed Celtics (17-24), 13-1, in five innings.
Carlow scored its lone run in the top of the first. Back-to-back singles from Haley Bicko (Johnstown, Pa./Greater Johnstown HS) and Fran Beighley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum Senior HS) put runners on to start the inning, and a double steal resulted in a throwing error by the catcher that allowed Bicko to score. Another steal by Beighley and a two-out walk saw runners on the corners for Carlow, but the Tigers escaped the inning with a strikeout.
Carlow retired the Tigers in order in the bottom half of the frame, but Salem gained the lead in the bottom of the second.
With two outs on the board, three hits in a row tied the game 1-1 for the Tigers, and a walk loaded the bases. Three more hits brought in five more runs for Salem before a fly out ended the inning.
Salem strung together six hits and took advantage of an error to score seven runs (two earned) in the bottom of the third to go ahead 13-1. The Tigers retired the Celtics in order in the fourth, and although Carlow held Salem scoreless in the bottom half of the frame, the Celtics were unable to mount a comeback in the top of the fifth.
Anna Schumacher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) was saddled with the loss after allowing six earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk in 1.2 innings of work.
Franchesca Alvaro earned the win for Salem, scattering four hits, striking out six and walking one. Karmen Hogan went 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI, Bella Ortiz went 2 for 3 with two RBI and Kendall Lemley hit 2 for 4 with two RBI in the win.
