Leesburg, Florida–Sage's softball team posted a 7-6 win over Pitt-Greensburg in their first game on Tuesday night and watched their win streak grow to four games. Taking on Bates College in the final contest on Tuesday, the streak was snapped as the Bobcats tallied an 8-0 win over Sage. The Gators stand at 4-4 at the midway point of their spring training trip.
Against Pitt-Greensburg, Sage's rookie Katelyn Rice (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) belted her first career homerun in the first at-bat of the game to spot Sage to a 1-0 lead. Junior Emily Agate (Franklin Square, NY/H. Frank Carey) was 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs scores and three RBI's. Senior captain Alicia Swavely (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), this week's Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week, drove in a run and added a double for Sage.
Sophomore Taylor Dicranian (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) started for Sage, going 6.1 innings with two earned runs off seven hits and earned the win. Junior pitcher Chandler Degrenier (North Adams, MA/Mount Everett Regional) worked .2 innings with four earned runs off three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Dicranian is now 1-0 in the circle for Sage.
Against Bates, Sage was held to one hit as Payton Buxton threw a complete game shutout with three strikeouts in the five innings of work. She stands at 1-1 as Bates improves to 4-1. She got offensive support from Julia Panepinto who added a solo homerun in the fourth inning and a RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Agate got the Gators' lone hit came as Agate singled in the second inning but was unable to score in the inning.
Sage junior pitcher Katerina Lagace (Newington, CT/Newington) worked 4.1 innings with four earned runs off six hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. She drops to 2-2. Dicranian worked in relief and also gave up four earned runs off four hits.
The Gators are back in action on Wednesday, March 11 facing Concordia Chicago at 9:15 a.m. and Wentworth Institute of Technology at 1:30 p.m.
