Men’s Basketball concludes Virginia Beach trip with loss to Apprentice School

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Carlow University men's basketball concluded its weekend trip to Virginia Beach with a 92-62 loss to The Apprentice School Sunday afternoon.

Oscar Contreras led the team with 20 points, two assists and two steals in the effort.

Isaiah Stein and Byron Gaskins added 11 points each, and Gaskins also recorded eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Celtics (2-4) got off to a slow start against the Builders (4-1) that put them behind the remainder of the game.

Carlow started off trading leads with Apprentice School, ahead 11-9 at one point in the half before a Builders three-pointer set off a 19-2 run that spanned over five minutes.

Neither team would score for almost two minutes late in the half as the Apprentice School took a 43-21 advantage into halftime.

The Celtics went on an 8-2 run to end the second half, but it was too little, too late for the Celtics as the Builders outscored Carlow, 49-41, in the second half.

The Apprentice School outrebounded the Celtics, 54-39, and scored 45 points off the bench to Carlow's 11.

Avin Hawkins led all scorers with a game-high 24 points off the bench for the Builders. Kelby Saunders, Jr. pulled down 14 boards, and three other players scored double figures.

The Celtics return to action after the Thanksgiving break with a 7 p.m. Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference road trip to Penn State Behrend Nov. 29.
