Women’s Basketball defeated by Maine Fort Kent in USCAA Championship consolation game

PETERSBURG, Va. --- Carlow University women's basketball ended the season with a 66-58 loss to the University of Maine Fort Kent in the USCAA Small College National Championship consolation game Monday morning.

A slow second quarter and too many turnovers proved to be the downfall of the Celtics (12-14), as the Bengals ended the year 13-10 overall with the win.

Sydney Carr led the Celtics with a double-double 14 points and 14 rebounds with nine assists. Emari Stinnette and Shaelyn Clark added 12 points apiece.

The Bengals struck first, and it was almost two minutes before the Celtics scored, with Clark putting the first five points on the board to give Carlow the lead.

Carlow maintained its lead until a three-pointer with 3:54 remaining in the quarter gave Fort Kent a 13-11 advantage.

A jumper from Carr tied the game at 13-all, but free throws put the Bengals ahead once again. A last-second jump shot by Clark saw Carlow trailing by one heading into the second quarter.

Rylie Blair hit a jumper to give Carlow the lead early, but a layup and resulting free throw from the foul set off a 10-0 run for the Bengals that spanned over three minutes.

The Celtics held Fort Kent scoreless for almost three minutes, chipping away at the Bengals' double figure lead to trail by four. A layup with 30 seconds left in the half saw Fort Kent with a 30-24 lead at intermission.

Three minutes into the third quarter, Emma Aubrey hit a trey to tie the game at 34. The Celtics kept it close throughout but trailed by eight heading into the final quarter.

Carlow came within three points of tying the game several times to start the quarter before Fort Kent pushed its lead to 11 with a trey at 3:51. Carlow responded with a three-pointer of its own from Emiley Hillgartner the next trip down the court, cutting the Bengals' advantage to eight.

Fort Kent regained a 10-point advantage and maintained a double figure lead until the final seconds when it was too late for the Celtics to recover.

The Bengals held a narrow 55-51 rebound margin over the Celtics and scored 23 points off 19 Carlow turnovers on the day. Fort Kent outscored Carlow 28-16 in the paint and 10-4 off the bench.

Coreeahn Yharbrough led the Bengals and all scorers with 20 points and eight steals, while Tamia Roebuck and Hannah Jones added 15 and 12 points, respectively.
