Men’s Basketball picks up first win of the season over Penn State Shenango

SHARON, Pa. --- Carlow University men's basketball picked up its first win of the season with a narrow 98-94 victory over Penn State Shenango on the road Wednesday.

Byron Gaskins went 18 for 19 from the foul line and scored a game- and career-high 33 points for the Celtics (1-3). He also picked up three steals and two blocks.

Galen Waters added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Oscar Contreras and Nehemiah Brazil scored 12 and 10 points respectively off the bench.

The Lions (1-6) jumped out to a 10-5 advantage in the first half before a Griffin Ruhlman layup set off a 21-2 run that spanned almost seven minutes to give Carlow a 26-12 lead midway through the half.

The Celtics led, 58-41, at halftime.

Carlow extended its lead to 20 points early in the second half, but Shenango rallied to attempt a comeback late in the game.

Trailing 89-80 with just over a minute remaining in the game, the Lions made one final push to get within three points of tying the game, but the Celtics were able to hold them off until the end.

Shenango outscored the Celtics, 53-40, in the second half.

Carlow scored 27 points off 25 Shenango turnovers, but the Lions outrebounded the Celtics, 53-44.

Shenango scored 52 points off the bench to Carlow's 33 and outscored the Celtics, 46-32, in the paint.

Quintin Stephens recorded a double-double 20 points and 10 boards off the bench for the Lions.

Carlow takes a road trip to Virginia Beach this weekend to face Regent University and Apprentice School for games Saturday and Sunday.
