Wonica Collects Five Hits in AMCC Opener

The Alfred State softball team opened up AMCC play at Penn State Altoona. The Lions rallied for a walk-off 5-4 victory in game one and took game two 14-6.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 1st when Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) and Krista Lovell (Addison) executed the double steal.

The Lions answered back with a pair of unearned runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning Casey Reese collected a two-RBI single up the middle.

Angela Martone (Candor) tied it up in the 3rd with a RBI single to center to plate Kailey Wonica (Staten Island/Moore Catholic) but the Lions answered right back with a RBI single of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Lovell tied it back up plating Wonica with a single up the middle in the 5th. She gave the Pioneers the lead in the 6th when she drew a one-out bases loaded walk. Unfortunately the Pioneers couldn't add to the lead and stranded the bases loaded.

Altoona tied it in the 7th when Brooke Colledge hit a one-out RBI single to right center. After recording the second out, Colledge came around to score after a Pioneer error.

Wonica finished 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, Lovell was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI, and Sarah Boyce (Cortland) was 2 for 4. Fisher allowed nine hits and two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work in the circle. She didn't walk a batter and struck out a pair.

In the nightcap, the Lions jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a four-run 1st inning. The Pioneers answered right back with four of their own in the 2nd. Boyce drew a bases loaded walk, Wonica followed with a two-RBI single to right center, and Boyce stole home to tie it up.

A sac fly by Colledge in the 2nd made it 5-4 and the Lions held that lead until the 4th Lovell drove in Wonica and Boyce with a double to center to give Alfred State the 6-5 advantage.

PSA scored a pair of runs in the 4th to take the lead for good. They scored three more in the 5th and ended the game with four in the 6th.

Wonica and Lovell both finished 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI to lead the Pioneer seven-hit attack. Martone also finished 2 for 3.

The Pioneers will next play on Tuesday (please note the change) when they host RIT for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
