Pioneers Impressive in Season Opening Victory

The Alfred State volleyball team got solid all around play as they swept Wells College, 25-8, 25-18, 25-23, in the season opener for both teams. The Pioneers were playing their first game in nearly two years.

Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) got the Pioneers off to a fast start as she was able to 14 straight points to lead Alfred State to a 15-1 lead en route to a 25-8 victory in set one. 

Wells jumped ahead 8-3 in set two before the Pioneers fought back. Racquel Gerstenberger (Schoharie) served seven straight points and Alfred State erased the deficit and went up 18-12 before winning the set 25-18.

The third set was back and forth with multiple swings in momentum. The set featured seven ties. Perkins had a big kill to tie it at 23-23. An attack error followed by one final kill by Perkins gave the Pioneers the victory.

Perkins led the Pioneers with eight kills and seven aces. In her first collegiate game Nayomie Ferrer (Eastridge) passed out 16 assists, had eight digs, and was credited with seven kills. As a team, the Pioneers registered 12 service aces. 

The Pioneers host a tri-match on Saturday. They take on Cazenovia at 10 a.m. Cazenovia battles Houghton at Noon and Alfred State and Houghton tangle at 2 p.m.
