Alfred, NY- The Alfred State baseball team split today's AMCC doubleheader against Penn State Behrend. The Lions won game one 8-0, and the Pioneers won game two 5-4.
In game two, Joshua Gardner went 2-4 with two homeruns and two RBIs. Connor Kiefer went 1-4 with a solo blast. Christopher Mattoon pitched 8.0 innings, only allowing four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Caden Fortunato came in and picked up the save.
After a three-and-out inning, the Pioneers got the scoring started in their first at-bat. Joshua Gardner led off with a solo bomb to left field to take the 1-0 lead. Two batters later Tyler Petrey reached on an error. After advancing to second on a tag, Petery would score on an error to make it a 2-0 game.
The Lions answered with a three-run inning in the second to take the 3-2 lead. After a couple scoreless innings, the Pios tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Gardner got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Elijah Barinas followed with a single. Then three batters later, Tyler Kosky notched an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
Then in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Gardner hit his second homer of the game to regain the lead, 4-3. PSB answered in the with a run in the eighth inning, the Pioneers took back the lead with a solo homerun from Connor Kiefer put ASC up 5-4 headed into the ninth.
In game one, Ryan Bailey suffered the loss after pitching 6.2 innings. Anthony Snyder tallied a double as the lone extra base hit. The Lions got on the board first and were able to hold the Pioneer offense at-bat as the went on to win 8-0.
