AMCC WRESTLERS PREPARE FOR QUAD MEET ON SATURDAY

AMCC wrestling schools will take to the mats this Saturday, January 13 at Hiram College for the AMCC Quad Meet. The meet will feature the only official AMCC regular season competition in the second season of wrestling being a conference-sponsored sport. 

The Alfred State College Pioneers are coming off a great weekend in Iowa at the NWCA National Duals. Alfred State finished top-20 in the nation, as they claimed 18th place. Alfred State sitting at 5-3 on the season in dual competitions, to go along with a few top finishes top five finishes in Open competitions. The Pioneers have confidence and depth in each weight class as they head into the weekend looking for a back-to-back championship. The Pioneers are led by seniors Nic Barrett (285) and Justin Smith (165). So far this season, they both won some brackets in open tournaments and helped secure dual wins with timely falls when needed.

The Hiram Terriers host the AMCC wrestling quad meet after participating in nine different events throughout the first half of the season. Senior Alex Savering (141 lbs) started the year strong with a fourth-place finish at the Mount Union Invitational before freshman Hayden Berry (174 lbs) won three bouts at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Savering would go on to place fifth at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational, while senior Seth Holt (165 lbs) has picked up wins across multiple events this winter. Hiram is 0-4 in duals this season after placing third at the AMCC Championships in 2022-23.

The Penn State Behrend Lions wrestling team started off the first half of the season undefeated in dual meets with a 3-0 record. Behrend has five wrestlers with double-digit wins led by freshman Cole Neil (141) with an 18-7 record. Senior Peyton Hearn has placed in three tournaments and has a 14-3 record at 149/157. Freshman 197 Matthew Caldwell paces the team with six pins so far this season.

The Panthers enter the new year without a dual meet victory but have seen improved results in both dual formats and invitationals. They have been led by a trio of wrestlers at higher weight classes who all possess win percentages greater than 65%. Sophomore DJ Slovick leads the team with 14 wins, posting a win percentage of .700 with seven wins by fall, one by tech fall and six by major decision. Senior Colton Gietler is the Panthers most efficient wrestler, winning 10 of his 14 matches. He has five wins by fall and one by major decision. Freshman Gavin Thompson has stepped into the heavyweight class to great success, posting a 10-5 record with 5 wins by fall.

The quad meet will kick off at 12:00pm in Hiram's Price Gymnasium.
