LA ROCHE BASEBALL SEASON CONCLUDES IN NCAA REGIONAL

The La Roche College baseball team's season came to an end after falling to Cortland State 10-2 in an NCAA Mideast Regional elimination game on Friday afternoon. Both of the Redhawks' regional opponents played in last year's College World Series National Semifinal.

Senior firstbaseman David Lemley bailed the Redhawks out in the top of the first making a leaping catch and tag on a high throw. Tunstall got out of a runner at third and two-out jam.

Cortland picked off the Redhawks to end the bottom of the first. The Dragons opened the scoring with a three run homer in the second.

Sophomore catcher Joe Professori and senior infielder Ian Velez drew walks and senior infielder Mitchel Yard hit a 2-out single to load the bases in the second. La Roche took the count to 2-2 in the next at bat but a strikeout ended the inning.

Tunstall left runners at the corners to end the third.

Senior outfielder Luis Navedo got things going in the bottom of the third taking a 2-out 2-1 pitch to opposite field. The solo shot was his fifth of the season and nineteenth of his career.

Cortland's Steven Figueroa provided his second homer of the game for a 6-1 lead in the fourth. A bases loaded walk made it 7-1.

Sophomore Cam Smith came in relief following a short rain delay and got a chopper to third to leave the bases juiced.

Freshman shortstop Elmo Trickett led off the fifth with an infield single and sophomore outfielder Jonathan Spina traded places with him on a fielder's choice. Senior outfielder Corey Lazor singled into right to place runners at the corners before a Navedo single up the middle cut the deficit to five.

Cortland got the run back in the sixth. La Roche was threatening in the bottom of the inning with runners at first and second and just one out. A called third strike and groundout to third ended the inning.

A missplay in centerfield extended the seventh inning and an error allowed Cortland to score twice. Senior pitcher Trey Claar however came in relief with two outs and the bases loaded and got the Dragons to groundout to Velez.

In the eighth, Lazor caught a Cortland runner trying to advance from first to third with a terrific throw from right field. The Redhawks went down in order in the eighth and ninth to end it.

Navedo went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a home run. Senior pitchers Trey Claar and Anthony Romano each tossed an inning of scoreless relief.
