SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT: DAY ONE RECAP

SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT: DAY ONE RECAP

In Game 1, played at D'Youville College, #3 Mount Aloysius College prevailed over #6 Hilbert College, 2-0, in a tight contest that saw a total of three hits by each team. Mounties picher Hannah Ruby got the shutout win, recording five Ks and just two walks. Karly Klein and Brianna Benscoter each contributed a hit and an RBI in the victory.

The Mounties found the going just as tough against #2 Medaille College in the second game of the day. The match up was scoreless through four innings when Mount Aloysius found a chink in the Mavs' armor. Courtney Link's base hit drove in Benscoter who scored on some heads up base running.

A promising start to the bottom of the sixth after a Mountie pitching change ended in lost opportunity for Medaille with two runners tagged out in rundowns, and the Mounties kept their advantage to claim a 1-0 victory.

Ruby got her second W of the day, another shutout that was preserved by Kara Pisczek who notched the save by allowing just 3 hits in the final 3 innings.

At the Penn St. Behrend softball complex, #5 Penn State Altoona defeated #4 D'Youville College 6-2 in a five hour-nine minute contest that spanned two weather delays. The Lions scored a run in the top half of the first and second innings, with both runs coming from Abby Showers.

D'Youville (15-18) plated a run in the bottom of the second on Alexa Haberer's RBI groundout to shortstop.

But Penn State Altoona created some breathing room for itself in the fifth, getting three runs across. Haley Giedroc's RBI single to left got things started, and Giedroc and Meghan Marasti both scored on an infield error later in the inning to make it 5-1. The Lady Lions used Bristol's RBI single to left in the sixth to increase their lead to 6-1.

D'Youville scored the game's final run in the bottom of the seventh on Lauren Gawlak's RBI single to right-center.

With the win, number five seed Penn State Altoona will advance to play top-seeded Penn State Behrend tomorrow, Saturday, May 5 at 9:00 a.m. That game was originally slated to occur following game one on Friday, but inclement weather forced the postponement of the contest to the next morning.
