The AMCC men's tennis championship tournament kicks off Saturday afternoon at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, PA when #1 Franciscan University takes on #4 Mount Aloysius College at 3:30 p.m. The second semifinal game will take place immediately after the first when #2 Penn State Behrend clashes with #3 Penn State Altoona.
Franciscan enters the championship tournament as the top seed with a perfect 5-0 conference record. Senior David Freytag leads the Barons in singles by racking up a 5-0 record at the No. 3 spot, while sophomore Richard Watson compiled a 4-0 record at No. 4 singles. In doubles play, juniors John Gallagher and Jarek Sulak went 5-0 at No. 1, while Freytag and Jack Galla were 4-0 at No. 3 doubles.
With a 4-1 record in conference play is second-seeded Penn State Behrend. 2016 conference player of the year, junior Yanique Apgar, finished the regular season with a 5-0 record at No. 1 singles, while freshman Scott Russell also went 5-0 at the No. 2 spot. Apgar and Russell recorded a 4-1 record at No. 1 doubles, with teammates, with freshman Brenden Dollard and sophomore Brent McFarland also going 4-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Third-seeded Penn State Altoona enters the tournament with a 3-2 conference mark. Freshman Tao Yang led the Lions with a 3-0 record at No. 6 singles. Freshman Jake Colledge and sophomore Johnathan D'Arcy went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles.
Rounding out the field, with a 2-3 regular season record, is fourth-seeded Mount Aloysius. Mountie junior Nick Centar went a combined a 4-1 at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots. Centar and sophomore Dylan Matta recorded a 2-1 record at No. 3 doubles.
The semifinals will take place on Saturday, April 22 at 3:30pm when #1 Franciscan takes on #4 Mount Aloysius. #2 Penn St. Behrend will face off with #3 Penn State Altoona after the conclusion of the first match. The championship match will be at 11:30am on Sunday, April 23.
