NAZARETH, BEHREND LEAD A-E SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER DAY ONE

With day one in the books at the Allegheny-Empire Swimming and Diving Championship, Nazareth College lead both men’s and women’s competitions through nine events. On the men’s side, they have a 107 point lead over Penn State-Behrend, while on the women’s side, they lead Hartwick College by 107 points. Along with the overall lead, the Golden Flyers also lead the Empire 8 standings. Both men’s and women’s programs from Penn State-Behrend currently hold the lead in AMCC competition, with 205 and 136 points, respectively.

Day one of the combined championship meet saw nine events up for grabs. Both men’s and women’s teams swam in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relay. Additionally, men’s teams also competed in the 3-meter diving event.

On the men’s side, Nazareth jumped out to the early lead when Dylan Long beat out his opponent from Alfred University by 0.4 seconds to win the event. He finished with a time of 4:41.67, shaving more than four seconds off of his Preliminary round time. The closest race of the day was in the 50-yard freestyle. Hartwick’s Diallo Marshall out-touched a Nazareth swimmer at the wall, winning the event by 4-one hundredths of a second. In the lone diving event of the day, Sidney Taylor of Nazareth took the 3-meter event with a score of 487.30.

Hartwick took an early lead in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, as they finished the race with three swimmers in the top five finishers. Abby Miller won the race with a time of 5:11.06. Teammate Abigail Schwartz finished in second with a time of 5:16.31 and Gabrielle Grimley was the 5th to finish in 5:19.69. Nazareth was able to take the other three events of the day.

The action will resume Thursday with preliminary swimming trials at 10:00 a.m., diving trials at 1:00 p.m. and the finals at 6:00 p.m. On the docket for day 2 are the 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, one-meter diving and the 400-yard medley relay.
