
ALFRED, N.Y. – La Roche women's lacrosse used a dominant second half to take down Alfred State on Thursday night, defeating the Pioneers, 10-5, clinching the top seed in the AMCC Tournament and at least a share of the AMCC Regular Season Championship.
The Redhawks would hold a 2-1 lead at the end of one quarter, scoring both goals in a 37 second stretch.
Kiki Nemcek was the first to find the back of the net at 11:48 on an assist by Kayla Mull. As noted, 37 seconds later, Jade Fuccaro would make it 2-0 off a Kinsey Sperling assist.
Alfred State's lone goal of the quarter came at 8:52 to make it 2-1.
The second quarter was a defensive battle and both goals belonged to the Pioneers, scoring at 14:23 and 2:11 to take a 3-2 lead into the half.
Out of the break, La Roche locked in, scoring just 14 seconds in when Jasey Reiser set up Alecia D'Urso to tie the game 3-3.
Exactly three minutes later, Reiser would score to give the Redhawks a 4-3 lead, then Sperling made it 5-3 at 8:38 on an assist by Alex Mecchia.
The Pioneers would close the third quarter scoring at 7:03, as the score read 5-4 going into the fourth.
La Roche would take total control in the first nine minutes of the fourth, building a 9-4 lead with four unanswered goals.
Fucarro would net three of the four goals during the stretch at 14:14, 6:29 and 6:00, the latter two assisted by D'Urso.
D'Urso would score the fourth of that stretch at 9:21, prior to setting up Fuccaro's two.
The Pioneers would add one last tally at 4:12 and scoring closed with Mecchia netting a goal at 2:26 to help seal the victory.
The shot totals ended in favor of La Roche, outshooting Alfred State, 28-24 and 22-19 in shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Jualianna Hornikel came through with 14 saves in the game, facing 19 shots.
La Roche closes the regular season on Thursday, Apr. 24 when they face Mt. Aloysius at home. The Redhawks have a chance to be outright regular season champions and opening draw is slated for 4 p.m.
