ERIE, Pa. – La Roche softball traveled to Penn State Behrend for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. Game one, it was all Lions, then in game two, the Redhawks made a late comeback, but would fall in extra innings.
GAME ONE: Penn State Behrend 10 La Roche 0 F/5
Game one started with two consecutive scoreless frames, but Penn State Behrend would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the third, brining home nine runs in the inning to take a commanding lead.
The Lions would close the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with the final run of the game, then hold off the Redhawks in the fifth to take the victory in five innings.
Maura Wade got the start, but threw only 2.1 innings, allowing six runs (five earned), six hits and one walk.
Finley Hohn threw 0.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) and four hits, then Emma Kaufman threw the final inning, allowing one run and two hits.
Offensively, La Roche had four hits all dispersed amongst four players.
GAME TWO: Penn State Behrend 6 La Roche 5 F/8
Game two scoring started in the bottom of the first, when Behrend struck to take a 2-0 lead.
The Redhawks would respond in the top of the second, tying the game at 2-2, behind a Makenzie Formeck RBI single and Brianna Wynn scoring on an error by the Lions.
La Roche would take a brief lead in the top of the third, 3-2, when Hohn delivered an RBI single, but Behrend would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning and then take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, making it 5-3 with a pair to cross the plate.
The Redhawks found a way, with the game on the line, pulling through in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.
Cassidee Fitterer would belt an RBI double to trim the deficit to 5-4, then Hohn's RBI fielder's choice tied the game at 5-5.
Behrend would only let the game go one extra inning, scoring the game-winning run on a bunt single in the bottom of the eighth to take the victory.
In game two, Klover Haberthier got the start, and tossed three innings, allowing four runs, five hits and walked three.
Wade would get hit with the loss, throwing 4.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs (one earned), four hits and walked three.
Offensively, the Redhawks sprayed nine hits, led by Wade's 3-for-4, while Hohn had two hits of her own.
La Roche is back in action on Monday, Apr. 14 when they face Franciscan at home in non-conference play. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
