Men’s Tennis Sweeps Lycoming to Conclude Regular Season

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team finished its 2023-24 regular season at home on Tuesday, blanking non-conference opponent Lycoming College 9-0 at the Adler Tennis Courts.

Penn State Altoona (10-4) recorded three strong wins in doubles play, then won all six singles matches – including going 3-for-3 in matches that went to tiebreak – to take all nine points over Lycoming (3-8).

In No. 1 doubles, the duo of Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona)/Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown) improved to 12-1 together this season with an 8-4 triumph. Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona) won 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match to post their ninth victory of the season, and Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) came away with an 8-4 win in the No. 3 spot for their sixth victory.

Penn State Altoona kept the wins coming as the match shifted to singles. Hess won 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot for his 11th victory in singles this year, and Chronister pulled out a 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 triumph in the No. 2 match to tie the Lions' single-season record for singles wins with his team-best 13th victory of the season. Beard also earned a tiebreak win in the No. 3 match, prevailing 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 for his 11th win.

Hibbs came away with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over his opponent in the No. 4 singles match for his eighth win of the season, and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) won 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 5 slot for his ninth victory. Parth Raval (Mumbai, India/Thakur Polytechnic) nabbed a tiebreak win in the No. 6 match, prevailing 6-0, 5-7, 10-2 for his first singles victory of the season.

Now, Penn State Altoona will prepare to enter the AMCC Tournament this weekend at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie. The Lions, who have the number two seed in the conference playoffs, will take on third-seeded Pitt-Greensburg this Saturday, April 20, in an AMCC Tournament semifinal match. The start time is approximately 5:30 p.m.
