Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Bobcats

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team traveled for an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, facing off against Pitt-Greensburg in a pair of games at Bobcat Park.

Pitt-Greensburg (8-19, 4-8 AMCC) pulled out a 6-3 victory in game one, but Penn State Altoona (12-13, 4-4 AMCC) battled back to win the second game 8-4.

Game One: Pitt-Greensburg 6, Penn State Altoona 3

The Bobcats built a 4-0 lead through three innings, and although Penn State Altoona worked its way back to make it a one-run game, the Lions' comeback fell short, as the home team finished with a three-run win.

Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Lions with a run scored. Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was 2-for-4, and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in.

Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel), Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College), Jimmy Mento (Corapeake, NC/Gates County), and Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) also had one hit apiece for Penn State Altoona, with Mento adding an RBI and Chamberlain and Rauch each scoring a run.

Eric Seick (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) got the nod at pitcher and tossed a complete game in the loss. The right-hander yielded four earned runs across six innings while recording seven strikeouts.

Pitt-Greensburg drew first blood in the bottom of the opening inning, as a James Domer solo home run put the Bobcats on the board. The home team used a three-run third to increase its advantage to 4-0, getting a two-run triple to left center by Thomas Smith and an RBI single to center from Zachary Tyson.

Penn State Altoona scored its first run in the top of the fourth, thanks to a trio of hits. With one out, Chamberlain singled to center, and after a fly out, Ingold's base hit to right field put two runners on for the Lions. Mento followed with an RBI single to left, making the score 4-1.

Penn State Altoona trimmed its deficit to one in the top half of the sixth with another two-out, run-scoring hit. Rauch and Ingold started the frame with back-to-back singles, and later in the inning with two outs, Hlivia delivered a two-run base hit to center to bring the Lions within one, 4-3.

But Pitt-Greensburg got both of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth, as the Bobcats capitalized on a pair of Lion errors to boost their lead back to three, 6-3. The home team held its lead through the seventh, taking a victory in game one.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 8, Pitt-Greensburg 4

Penn State Altoona surged ahead in the latter stages of the contest to claim victory in game two. With the score tied 2-2 after five, the Lions plated the go-ahead run in the sixth, then tacked five more runs on to their total in the seventh. Penn State Altoona held on to salvage a win by a four-run margin.

Rauch went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and two walks, and Ingold was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Chamberlain, Hlivia, and Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) also finished with one hit each. Chamberlain had two runs scored, one RBI, and a walk, Hlivia notched two RBI, and McClain scored a run.

Tristin Lockett (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) started on the mound and went 2/3 inning in a no decision. Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) delivered 3 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen after that, allowing four walks and just one hit while striking out four batters.

Sean Wing (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) followed with three innings in relief, allowing one run and recording three strikeouts while earning his second win of the season. After 1/3 inning from Caden Suba (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), Cole Brechbill (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) tossed a scoreless 1 2/3 innings to register his first collegiate save.

Pitt-Greensburg again scored first in game two, as a Colin Solinski RBI groundout drove in a run in the bottom of the first.

But Penn State Altoona answered in the next half inning to take the lead. With one out, Rauch doubled, Ingold singled, and Mento walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Hlivia drove in a pair with his base hit that put the Lions in front, 2-1.

That score held up until the bottom of the fifth, when a two-out RBI single from Tyson helped Pitt-Greensburg tie the game at 2-2.

Penn State Altoona again countered quickly, leaping back in front in the next half inning. Chamberlain led off by reaching on an error, and he later scored on Mento's RBI groundout to third base, putting the Lions up 3-2.

Penn State Altoona added five much-needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh, scoring all of them with two outs. McClain started the inning with a single, then moved into scoring position on Green's sacrifice bunt. After a fly out, Chamberlain's RBI double increased the Lions' lead to 4-2. One batter later, Ingold's RBI double to left center gave Penn State Altoona a three-run cushion, and Pitt-Greensburg committed an error in the next at-bat that allowed Rauch, Ingold, and Mento to score, making it 8-2.

Pitt-Greensburg made it a four-run game in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Domer was hit by a pitch to bring in one run, and a Solinski walk allowed another to score. But Penn State Altoona forced the Bobcats to strand three runners on base, and the Lions escaped the inning without surrendering further damage.

Brechbill and the Lions retired Pitt-Greensburg in order in the bottom of the ninth, and Penn State Altoona clinched the game-two win.

Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball dips back into non-conference play this Thursday, April 18, when the Lions will travel to Greenville, Pa. to take on non-conference opponent Thiel College in a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
