Men's Volleyball falls 3-1 at Hiram

HIRAM — The Wittenberg men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match at Hiram on Tuesday night, falling 24-26, 25-18, 17-25, 21-25.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (10-8 overall), Hiram (12-11 overall)
  • Venue: Price Gymnasium - Hiram, Ohio
  • Tuesday marked the Tigers' first game since March 3.

Stat Leaders

  • Sophomore Michael Yurk (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) led the Tigers in kills with 12, followed closely by senior Tom Supan (Medina, Ohio/Medina) who had nine.
  • Leading the team in assists was sophomore Sam Richardson (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) with 18. Senior Andrew Diaz de Padilla (Nipmo, Calif./Central Coast New Tech) was right behind with 16 assists of his own.
  • Senior Kurt Klamfoth (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) and sophomore Moose Harper (Columbus, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) each closed the game with a solo block apiece, leading the Tigers.
  • Richardson continued his impressive performance, also leading the team in digs with six, but Yurk, Diaz de Padilla and sophomore Jake Downs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Milford) all were closely following with five each.

The Game

  • The first set went back and forth between the Tigers and Terriers up until 24 all. At that point, Hiram was able to win the next two points and came away with a 26-24 first set win.
  • In the second, Hiram started with a three-point run, but Wittenberg fought its way back and started going blow for blow once again. Wittenberg took a 16-13 lead on a 6-0 run and later took a 21-15 edge after back-to-back kills from Supan. They only let the Terriers put up three more points before taking the second set 25-18.
  • In the third set, both teams kept it close, but Hiram finished on a 9-4 run to take the set 25-17 along with the 2-1 lead in the match.
  • In the fourth, the teams once again were matching each other point for point until they were tied at 21. Hiram was able to finish the last four points by causing four straight attack errors to take the match.

Records & Milestones

  • Wittenberg is now 7-4 all-time against Hiram. The Tigers defeated Hiram 3-0 earlier this season on Feb. 17 in a neutral-site game at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
  • Third-year head coach Nathan Matthews is now 40-35 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Diaz de Padilla has 455 assists this season and ranks third in program history with 1,065 career assists. His 610 assists from last season rank seventh in program history for a single season.
  • Yurk has 221 kills this season and ranks eighth in program history with 414 career kills. He currently is tied for eighth in program history for single-season kills.
  • Supan has 361 career kills, which is seven shy of 10th all-time at Wittenberg. His 258 career digs rank ninth in program history in that category, and his 219 kills from last season rank 10th in program history for single-season kills.
