Men’s Tennis Nabs First Win in AMCC Opener

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team notched its first win of the 2023-24 season in its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match of the spring, as the Lions blanked league opponent Pitt-Greensburg 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

Penn State Altoona (1-3, 1-0 AMCC) put together a dominant performance throughout both singles and doubles play. In doubles, the Lions yielded only six games to Pitt-Greensburg (1-2, 0-1 AMCC) in three sets. In singles, the Bobcats combined to take only 15 games from Penn State Altoona across 12 sets.

The Lions began the day by winning all three doubles matches. In the No. 1 spot, the duo of Andrew Chronister (York, PA/Dallastown)/Casey Hess (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) improved to 4-0 this season with an 8-1 victory. Nick Beard (Manns Choice, PA/Bedford)/Kadyn Carey (Altoona, PA/Altoona) picked up their third doubles win together in the No. 2 match, prevailing 8-3. In the No. 3 doubles match, the team of Wilhelm Grot (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Emmett Hibbs (Richfield, PA/East Juniata) won 8-2 for their first win together this season.

Penn State Altoona continued its momentum in the singles portion of the match with six commanding wins. Included in the Lions' singles successes were a pair of career firsts, as Penn State Altoona's Carey and Jackson Newell (Leechburg, PA/Kiski) both recorded their first collegiate singles wins.

Hess led the way for the Lions with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 match for his third victory of the season, and Chronister posted a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash in the No. 2 match to improve to 4-0 this season. Beard earned his first win of the year in the No. 3 match, coming away with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over his opponent. Carey grabbed his first singles win in the No. 4 slot, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-2. Hibbs got his first win of the season in No. 5, claiming a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Newell rounded out the pack with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph in the No. 6 match for his first win.

Penn State Altoona men's tennis will return to non-conference play for its next match, as the Lions will travel to Beaver Falls, Pa. to take on Geneva College this Tuesday, March 19, at 6 p.m.
