Softball Tops St. Joseph, Emerson in Sunday Doubleheader

NAPLES, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona softball team reeled off its third and fourth wins in a row on Sunday at North Collier Regional Park, when the Lions posted victories against the University of St. Joseph and Emerson College in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Penn State Altoona (5-2) triumphed 7-6 over St. Joseph on a walkoff, then came back to defeat Emerson 8-5 in the Lions' second game of the day.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 7, St. Joseph 6

Penn State Altoona won its first game of the day in walkoff fashion, getting a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to hand St. Joseph (2-1) the loss.

Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base, and Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base, and she contributed the game-winning base hit for the Lions in the seventh.

Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, and Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) had a double and three RBI.

Brianna Bone (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) got the nod at pitcher to start the game and finished with a no decision after going 4 2/3 innings. Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to record her third win of the season.

Penn State Altoona scored the game's first runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to a bases-clearing hit by Storm. Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) led off with a single, Jordan Krawcion (Johnstown, PA/Central Cambria) reached on an error after putting down a sacrifice bunt, and Fisher had a base hit up the middle to load the bases. Storm followed with a three-run double to center, putting Penn State Altoona on the board.

The Lions got another run across in the bottom of the fourth. Lauck started the frame with a double to right center, and Hoppel's base hit to center put runner at the corners. Hoppel stole second in the next at-bat, and Lauck took advantage of the throw down to second to score, giving Penn State Altoona a 4-0 lead.

St. Joseph surged ahead with a six-run top of the fifth. Jenna Zup's RBI groundout to short plated her team's first run, and Avianna Ibrahim's RBI single to left made it 4-2. Ibrahim scored on a wild pitch, Kaitlyn Ouellete hit a two-run triple to right, and Analise Escarrama contributed a run-scoring single to center to give St. Joseph a 6-4 advantage.

Penn State Altoona scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 6-6. With two away, Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) reached on an error to keep the inning alive, and Feathers followed with a single to left to put two runners aboard for the Lions. Lauck's RBI single to right drove in Colledge, and Hoppel's RBI single down the right field line made it 6-6.

Penn State Altoona came up with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh. Feathers started the inning with a single up the middle, then moved into scoring position when she stole second. Lauck's single through the left side put runners at the corners, and after she swiped second base, Hoppel delivered a base hit up the middle to bring home Feathers and give Penn State Altoona a walkoff victory.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 8, Emerson 5

The Lions scored four runs in the top of the seventh in their second game of the day, overcoming a one-run deficit to deal Emerson (0-1) a loss in its season opener.

Feathers went 3-for-4 with her first home run of the season, three RBI, and two runs scored. Storm was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.

Lauck finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Maynard was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Madison Sitarek (Sykesville, MD/Century) was 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Fisher went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.

Nau started game two in the circle and pitched a complete game to improve to 4-0 on the season. She went all seven innings, surrendering five runs and striking out two batters.

In the top of the first, Storm reached with one out when she was hit by a pitch, and she advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Feathers' two-out RBI single drove her in, and the Lions grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first.

Penn State Altoona extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third, when Feathers hit a two-run homer to give the Lions a three-run advantage.

Emerson answered with a pair in the bottom half of the third, as Claire Overton plated a run with a groundout to shortstop and Grace Beaulieu brought in another with her sacrifice fly to right.

Penn State Altoona added a run to its total in the top of the fifth. Fisher reached on a one-out single, and Storm drove her in with a double in the next at-bat to make it 4-2.

But Emerson secured its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, when it scored three runs to go up 5-4. Sam Zannotti's RBI single trimmed Penn State Altoona's advantage to one, and Makenzie Killough's two-run base hit put Emerson on top by one.

But Penn State Altoona reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh, when the Lions scored four runs to jump back in front. Singles by Storm, Feathers, and Lauck loaded the bases with one out, before Maynard's RBI single tied the score at 5-5. Feathers scored on an infield error on the play to put Penn State Altoona up 6-5, and Sitarek padded the Lions' lead with a two RBI single that made it 8-5.

Emerson started the bottom of the seventh by getting two runners aboard, courtesy of an infield error and a single. But Penn State Altoona got a fly out and a double play to end the threat and close out the win.

Penn State Altoona softball heads into its final day in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic tomorrow, Tuesday, March 11, at North Collier Regional Park's field #4. The Lions will face Westfield State at 9 a.m., then wrap up their Florida trip against Widener at 11 a.m.
