Lions Split Uneven Doubleheader at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team took a doubleheader split with non-conference opponent Thiel College on Thursday at Tomcat Park, when the Lions won big in game one before being stifled in the nightcap.

Penn State Altoona (13-14) had an offensive outburst in game one, leading to a 19-3 victory. But Thiel (11-16) one-hit the Lions in the second game, winning it 4-1.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 19, Thiel 3

The Lions had a banner day at the plate in game one producing 19 runs on 16 hits. 10 different Penn State Altoona hitters finished with at least one hit.

Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs batted in, and three runs scored. Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored, Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) finished 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, two RBI, and a walk, and Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) was also 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI, and a walk. Luke Angstadt (Lancaster, PA/Cocalico) hit 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) was 1-for-1 with two walks, two RBI, and two runs scored, and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) was 1-for-2 with three run scored and a walk. Jimmy Mento (Corapeake, NC/Gates County) batted 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk, James St. Laurent-Friend (Wake Forest, NC/Wake Forest) finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Tyler Gordon (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Fred Guarino IV (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) contributed one RBI.

On the mound, Carter Piercey (West Chester, PA/Rustin) made his first collegiate start and finished with a no decision, allowing no earned runs on just three hits and a walk across three innings. He also struck out three batters. Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) pitched four innings after that and recorded his first collegiate win, allowing two runs while recording four strikeouts.

Penn State Altoona started the game by getting seven runs across in the top of the first inning. Rauch's two-run single through the right side opened the scoring, and an Angstadt RBI single into left made it 3-0. A wild pitch allowed Rauch to score, McClain drove in a pair with his base hit through the left side, and an infield error allowed Hlivia to score, increasing the Lions' advantage to 7-0.

Thiel picked up a run in the bottom of the first when Colton Brightwell led off the inning by reaching on an error and later came in on a balk.

But Penn State Altoona kept the offense clicking in the second inning, when another two-RBI single from Rauch upped the Lions' lead to 9-1.

The visitors followed that by adding five runs to their total in the third. Hillard drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home the first run of the frame, and Chamberlain came next with a two-run double to center. Guarino's RBI groundout and Mento's RBI single boosted Penn State Altoona's lead to 14-1 by the inning's end.

A three-run fourth inning propelled the Lions to a 17-1 advantage. Green drove in two runs with his triple to center, and he scored on a wild pitch to expand Penn State Altoona's lead to 16.

Run-scoring singles in the sixth from Hillard and Friend extended the Lions' advantage to 19-1.

Thiel picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Penn State Altoona finished with a comfortable 16-run victory.

Game Two: Thiel 4, Penn State Altoona 1

Unlike the game-one offensive explosion, Penn State Altoona was limited to just one hit and one run in the nightcap. The Tomcats scored two in the first to grab the early lead, which they never relinquished for the rest of the day.

Hillard had Penn State Altoona's lone hit and RBI, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Mento scored the only run after drawing a walk.

Brycen Flinton (Denver, PA/Cocalico) started on the mound and suffered the loss. In five innings of work, he surrendered only two earned runs while striking out a pair. Hlivia tossed one inning in relief to finish the game.

This time, Thiel was first to score, as the Tomcats put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the first. Chase Morrison's RBI single to right center gave the home team the game's first run, and Nathen Prunty later scored on an infield error to make it 2-0. Thiel picked up a run in the second on a Cole Sherwin sacrifice fly, increasing its advantage to 3-0.

Penn State Altoona was finally able to get on the board in the top of the fifth. Mento led off the frame with a walk, moved into scoring position on McClain's sac bunt, and eventually scored on a two-out RBI single to left by Hillard, making it 3-1.

But Thiel got that run back in the sixth, when a Brightwell sac fly put the Tomcats' lead back at three, 4-1.

Penn State Altoona returns home this weekend, when the Lions will get back to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play by hosting league opponent Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m.
